Hi!
I would like some opinions on this, even if some of these products are quite recent.
We will have Sybase as a server. On the client side, things are not so clear. Some clients are not very demanding. In fact, they might be only character mode terminals. But other clients might include PC's running Windows, Mac's and even SUN's with Openwindows.
ALL kinds of clients need to have some basic services, which is the reason why we need an app. which generates the SAME interface to all clients.
On the other hand, we want to provide sophisticated GUI apps. to the clients who can support it, namely all but the character mode terminals. But the need to generate to character mode terminals and to so many different platforms will considerably constraint the number and quality of features developed.
We are considering to develop a basic app. with APT (what about XVT?), and to support some advanced features with Gain or Build Momentum. It would have to be possible, though, for APT to call Gain or Build.
Eventually all clients will become graphical, but until then we have to provide some basic services to all.
All comments appreciated. Thanks in advance,
LUISA.

"Speaking for myself!"
JAM from JYACC, Inc - 116 John St, New York, NY 10038 USA. Tel: 212-267-7722
Fax: 212-608-6753. They have distributors in various European countries.
Uniface - UNIFACE International, Hogehilweg 16, 1101 CD Amsterdam,
The Netherlands +31-20-6976644 Fax: +31-20-6912912. They also have
a big operation in California, but Amsterdam is the Headquarters.
These two products are about as different as you can get. JAM is a
programming environment. You can create routines with a mixture of Graphic
tools and programming in a script language, or drop to C where you need
to.
Uniface is an application generator. You specify the application schema, the
database schema, etc. all at a fairly high level, and it builds the
application for you. It all depends are on whether you are procedure
driven or database driven.
Neither product, in my opinion, is gives you as much control over the
"look and feel" of the resulting application as you'd really want. JAM
apps look like JAM apps. This is part of what you give up in exchange
for portability. If you have further questions feel free to email me.
