SPECIAL SYBASE MIGRATION PROMOTION
Announcing a special promotional offer to help over 1100 Sybase customers on
non
-Sun platforms, migrate to the Sun platform. To reduce engineering and
support
costs, Sybase has announced to its customers that it is going to drop
support
of their products on numerous platforms within 18 months. Sybase has
selected Sun
as its preferred partner to help Sybase customers migrate smoothly to Sun
hardware.
This promotion runs through June 25, 1999.
Where'd you get this message? I find it hard to believe, myself. If it
were true, it certainly would make me look hard and long at remaining a
Sybase DBA. If it is true, I know they'll lose my current customer, given
all the problems they're having with 11.9.2 and tech suppport's complete
uselessness. This is an HP shop to the core, and if they dumped HP/UX
support, they'd be out of here on rails.
I've got to believe this is bull-pucky, probably a shady character
re-selling Suns trying to generate panic to boost his sales.

Sybase would never drop HP-UX. They are probably looking to drop platforms
like DataGeneral, Pyramid, Bull, etc.

Relax the original poster said the letter said for a thousand odd
customers. That would make it a fairly obscure platform. It didn't
say which platform(s), but I'd figure that they'd target the
customers correctly. I'm not sure why the letter would have mentioned
migrating to Sun specifically. It sounds more reasonable to just
suggest
one of the big four UNIX ones (or NT or whatever).

What sort of problems?

I don't think we know who the letter was actually from. Was it
on Sybase letterhead?

The 11.9.2 release is available on NT, HPUX, DEC OSF, Sun Solaris (sparc, not
x86), and IBM AIX.
Some platforms that are supported at the 11.5 level not included in the above
list: SGI IRIX, SCO Unixware
Some platforms that are supported at the 11.0.3 level not included in the
above list: NCR, AlphaNT, SCO Unix, SCO Unixware, Sequent, SGI, AlphaVMS

After seeing the original post by Gary H., I promptly called my Sales
Rep to find out whether this is legit or a hoax. It *IS* legit, several
platforms are being "End of life", in other words, support is being
dropped for them. Letters were sent to Sybase folks (internal, like
Sales Reps) early last week. That announcement letter was dated January
11th, 1999. According to my Rep, the platforms are: Fujitsu, Motorola,
NCR, Sequent, NEC, ICL, Sony, Novell, NEX, AT&T, Pyramid, Bull, Apple,
Tandem, Semiens (sp?), UniSys and Stratus.

Well, that's a pretty big list. Some I don't think make Unix servers
any more (Apple, Motorola, Sony & NeXt). Some only cover some regional
areas mostly (like Fujitsu and NEC in Japan and ICL, Bull and Seimens
in Europe). Some only have a very small market share nowadays (NCR,
AT&T, UniSys and Pyramid). But some are curious - Novell is still
big and with v5 out still seems to be competitive. Sybase may just
have too small an exposure on it to justify continuing support.

WebNFS(TM) CERTIFIED AS 100% PURE JAVA
WebNFS(TM) Client SDK for Java Technology Developers advances the Internet
from
being an informational kiosk to being a fully integrated extension of the
desktop.
It builds on 12 years of NFS evolution to deliver information access across
the
expanse of the Internet -- even remotely through firewalls. WebNFS
eliminates
the need for "downloads" and "uploads" via FTP.
It provides high speed, scalable, robust access to information stored on
remote
computers.
WebNFS is supported by the major independent Internet vendors including
Netscape,
Novell, Apple, and IBM, as well as many NFS server vendors.
To download the WebNFS, see http://www.sun.com/webnfs/download/
SHADE AND SPIXTOOLS
Application developers, computer architects, and researchers often want to
study
the low level behavior of applications. What are the instructions executed
by
an application? What is its cache behavior? What portions of the application
account for the most number of executed instructions? Shade and the related
Spix
tools help answer these questions.
Shade is a framework for developing instruction tracing and simulation
tools.
It simulates the execution of an application and provides a programming
interface
to collect arbitrary data while the application runs. The interface makes it
easy to write tools that collect and process address trace information and
other
related data. The Shade kit also contains pre-written tools to perform
common tasks.
The Spixtools provide a library for classifying and disassembling SPAR
instructions
and tools that disassemble executables and identify basic block boundaries.
To download Shade and Spixtools (or read a description), see:

JAVA(TM) RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT FOR SOLARIS(TM)
The production release of the Java(TM) Runtime Environment for Solaris(TM),

The JRE
is tuned and tested for versions 7, 2.5.1 and 2.6 of the Solaris(TM)
operating
environment.

As far as I know all teir 3 platforms have now been dropped (eg: Open VMS,
Next) and some teir 2 platforms have been dropped (NT/Alpha), but no Teir 1
platforms have been effected. In fact it is the opposite - engineering staff
have been moved to these Teir 1 platforms.

Alpha, unfortunately, is one of the others, but we knew about that
one).
