Is there any reason why I would be receiving conflicting instructions?
Would it have anything to do with the type or amount of data being
stored? And if that isn't enough are there any hidden dangers one who
hasn't done an upgrade in so long might want to look out for.

Your VAR is wrong. Jumping from rev 6 to rev 9 is a non-trivial
upgrade. There are differences in the way Universe files are
structured internally, and there are backward link issues that will
result in "broken" files once you load the data on rev 9. Cleaning up
that before hand is what the resizing thing is all about.
If you just load your rev 6 data onto rev 9 without going through the
steps Ardent recommends, you *might* get away with it. But I wouldn't
bet *my* contract on it! <grin>
