9412.1 ****** DECEMBER Meeting Notice ******
------------------------------------------------
PURPOSE: Our December meeting will feature Gary Sing of
Unidata demonstrating wIntegrate. This feature-laden GUI
development tool enables you to run your Pick legacy
application from a MS Windows environment. The wIntegrate
product can transform character-based screens to use familiar
Windows features such as icon bars, popup toolboxes, dialog
boxes, and Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). Using wIntegrate
provides a face-lift for full color, font, mouse, scroll bar, and
copy/paste capabilities. More advanced features include
network connectivity, a GUI report builder, and a GUI for Pick
data import/export. Incorporating a graphic image, bar or pie
chart is easy. Using wIntegrate's DDE feature you can set up a
query on your Pick host, launch an MS Excel window and
automatically export the Pick data to Excel with a single icon.
If you need to look and feel Windows, don't miss this one.

README

Newsletter Editor/Publisher

It is with deep regret that I inform you of the untimely death
of Richard 'Dick' Pick. As many of you may know, Mr.
Pick died October 17 from complications of a massive
stroke he suffered on October 6. He was 56. On behalf of
our members, I would like to offer our heart-felt condo-
lences to the Pick family. Mr. Pick was a living legend. He
will be missed.

While the mention of Dick Pick usually lends itself to
controversy, most of us owe him our livelihoods. He was a
very intelligent man with vision and tenacity. In a time of
monstrous computers requiring extensive operating re-
sources, Don Nelson and Dick Pick produced a database
manager that would empower non-computer people to create
sophisticated software applications with little computer
background. If you remember nothing else about Richard
Pick, remember the magnitude of this accomplishment. It is
highly unlikely it will ever be repeated.

After twenty-five years, the Pick data model is positioned
for the mainstream with the mathematical and relational
theory to prove it. What more proof do we need than
witnessing leading database vendors, such as Oracle and
Informix, positioning to incorporate the virtues of the nested
relational database model. The intuitive, efficient, forgiv-
ing, and easy to use environment Mr. Richard Pick commer-
cialized back in 1972 is a legacy unmatched in the computer
industry. The 'post-relational', 'nested relational', 'non-first
normal form' data models have been validated and the PICK
data model will live on.

In recent years, Pick Systems finally became a responsive,
market driven company. Senior management at Pick
reports the company is financially sound with no major
debts, taxes or other obligations. Their product development
strategy is set for the next 2 years. Their staff is mature and
eager to succeed. Anyone familiar with their most recent
offerings can attest to the achievements of a talented
engineering staff and dedicated support team.

With the significant enhancements incorporated into Ad-
vanced Pick v6.1, the added power of Flash/BASIC, the entry
into the GUI market, and the newly released ODBC/SQL
capability, Pick Systems is emerging as a contender in the
database market. With continued R & D, the proper leadership
and new marketing campaign, Pick Systems will have a very
bright future.

As of this writing, Mark Pick has returned to Pick Systems.
As I've mentioned before, Mark has been good to our group
and I'm sure you'll join me in wishing him all the best. Also
notable, Pick Systems has assembled a hiring committee to
conduct a search to find a new CEO. Currently, Brian Stone
is acting in this capacity. As more information becomes
available as to the future of Pick Systems, I will surely pass it
on. Or, if you would like to see Pick Systems for yourself,
check out DB/Expo '94 in NYC. It's at the Jacob K. Javits
Convention Center from December 6-8. For more informa-
tion, call 415/966-8440.

Now, as to the future of CPP. David Koskovich has decided
to enjoy CPP meetings for a change and will no longer be
functioning as a Board member. I would like to thank David
for his efforts over the years. I don't believe he has ever
missed a meeting.

That leaves me to run CPP. Starting in 1995, I will be
making a number of changes to make the group easier to
administrate and run more efficiently. Most of this discussion
will be in our next newsletter. The most immediate and
noticeable change will be a new format to the newsletter. I am
seeking to rename the newsletter, any suggestions would be
appreciated. I will also attempt to increase membership as
well as collect annual dues. Last year, no dues were col-
lected. Without this income, the group will cease to exist.

I am also soliciting your ideas on making the group better.
We've done pretty godd so far, but I know there is always
room for improvement. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am planning our next meeting to face-off two application
development tools -- System Builder SB+ vs. Symbion. This
ought to be a very interesting meeting. Hopefully, I can put it
together for January '95. Well, that's enough for now. See
you December 8.

How about putting it in a list-server such as Majordomo or LISTSERV
and allowing 'Net subscriptions?
