An Oracle8i database may already be installed on your machine when you
install Oracle Designer.
In this case, when you install the Oracle Designer client software, you will
see a message indicating that the Installer
cannot install to multiple Oracle home directories. Let the installation run
to this point, then acknowledge the message
and exit from the Installer. Run the Windows registry editor (regedit) and
change the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\ALL_HOMES\DEFAULT_HOME
from the Oracle home name for the database (e.g. OraHome81) to the name of
the Oracle home where you want to
install Oracle Designer 6i (e.g. Orant). Restart installation of the
Designer client software; the installation should proceed
correctly.
Now when I modify the registry value and restart the installation process I
get a fatal error which states that the directory "Orant" already exists.
Any ideas short of uninstalling my previously installed Oracle Client
software would be helpful.
Check out the Designer installation guide. It discusses an order of
installation for products. Here is what it sais:
At the [database] server:
Oracle8i Server, Release 8.1.6 (but see Order of installation before
installing)
Order of installation:
Client and server on separate machines
1. Oracle 8.1.6 database
2. Oracle Designer client software
3. Oracle Repository
Client and server on the same machine
1. Oracle Designer client software (into first Oracle home)
2. Oracle 8.1.6 database (into separate Oracle8i Oracle home)
3. Oracle Repository
I just went through the same B.S. I can't believe oracle makes their
installations so difficult. I can go on about Oracle but I will stop
here!!!!! I had to uninstall oracle 8i, then install Designer, then
reinstall Oracle 8i, then the repository. There may be other ways in
which you can tweak the registry to get around the problem, but I was
unable to find any information regarding that strategy.
Hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

I have done the impossible! ;-]
I also had the problems installing Oracle8i and Designer 6 on the same
machine.
Here's the solution:
1. install Oracle8i
2. when installing Designer6 into the same oracle_home you get some error
message,
so you have to create a new oracle_home for the Designer6. But it's
not done yet. When you try to install
Designer into the new oracle_home you will get the errors later during
the installation (thanx Oracle!).
3. after creating the new oracle_home you have change the registry:
in hkey_local_machine\software\oracle\all_homes you should find
the key default_home with the oracle_home
for the Oracle8i
change it to the new oracle_home
4. go on with Designer installation
This is a bit tricky. But i found out without any Oracle help files. Can you
find any documentation on that?

It seems to me it won't install -- they only support NT configuration.
I get to the point where the Repository 6i Administration Utility
is up and running, but it won't install the repository. All I get
is an error message (after clicking on Install button):
'ckrau61
WARNING:
Oracle with Enterprise Edition option is not present.
Retry Repository installation after re-installing this option.'
I am using 8i Personal Edition.
So I suppose your options are: downgrading your OS, waiting
for new Oracle version, or getting some other tool
(I suppose we do the latter).

Check out the Designer 6i installation guide. Designer 6i requires
the repository to be installed to use the Designer product. The
repository product requires at a minimum, Oracle 8i standard edition
when the designer client and database server are on separate machines.
If the the client and server are on the same machine, Oracle 8i
Enterprise is required. Once again, an example of Oracle coming
through for their users. Below is the text from the designer
installation guide chapter 1:
This release of Oracle Designer supports the following client/server
configurations:
Client and server on separate machines
Repository platform
Server operating system
Client operating system
Oracle8i Server, Release 8.1.6 Enterprise Edition
Certified Oracle database server platforms are suitable (see Release
Notes)
Windows NT or Windows 95 or Windows 98
Client and server on the same machine
Repository platform
Operating system
Oracle8i Server, Release 8.1.6 Standard Edition
Windows NT
Actually, they do claim to support the Personal edition, too:
So, the problem must be the OS, Windows 2000 Professional, right?
(I've already installed O8iPE & OD6i, it just won't install
the repository.)

PS. I haven't been using Oracle products before, but I do have
to mark that their product usability must've been designed only
to maximize the number of Oracle consultants.

I just took a look at the link that you mentioned below. My
interpertation of the documentation is the same as yours. If you are
running Windows NT, then yes, the repository is supported with
Oracle8iPE. On Windows 2k, the only supported DB version appears to
be 8i enterprise. What is interesting however, is the fact that they
do now mention a W2k configuration with the Database server and
Designer clinent on the same machine. I am running this
configuration. W2k server, Oracle 8i Enterprise and Designer 6i all
on the same machine. Not too cool on Oracle's part.

Anyway, Designer 6i Release 2 solves the problem that required a specific
installation order of products (it can be installed into a home other than
the DEFAULT_HOME). It should be available from OTN in a few days.

However, Designer 6i Release 2 is not available to download from OTN yet.
Although it should be in a few days. The release notes were left on OTN
after a premature version of Release 2 was temporarily made available in
October.

About Des6i availability on the web:
could you (being an Oracle employee) bring up the idea of:
a) implementing anonymous ftp to download.oracle.com again
(it actually still is possible to download without working thru the licence,
by typing the internet address of download.oracle.com, but this is http, not
ftp)
b) start supporting "Smart Download" (Netscape, GetRight or other resuming
download programs)
or c) break up the file into smaller pieces?
It'll save a lot of traffic; e.g. I must have downloaded about
4.5GB trying to get 8iV3 (over 500MB in one chunk), but never succeeded.
Same for OEM 2.2 (373MB, again, one file).
