I've setup a 9i Database on solaris 8 - everything seems ok.
I tried to install 9iAS Portal, but there is a problem since the 9i DB
no more allows to logon sys/change_on_install... and so some scripts
e.g. "onetime" fails (are their more scripts that rely on the "old
fashioned logon"?)
I've red in 9iAS Portal Installation requirements said it has to a
8.1.7DB (or higher), I thought 9i would be also OK, am I wrong?
Anyone experienced the same problem?

I hate to say it: but the real fix is to stop logging on as SYS as a normal
user. The clear recommendation is that connections as SYS should now always
be "as sysdba".
And when Oracle decides that compatibility with Oracle 7 is no longer a
major requirement (and I'd probably hold my breath on that one, since the
rate of releases is going through the roof... hold on for 9i Release 2!!),
then that parameter is likely to be obsoleted... and your scripts will all
start failing again.
So, time to sort those scripts out!

I thought he was actually referring to a script provided by the portal
install??, so its a bug??
I also found a problem installing 9iAS, i set the size of the SGA to 50M
as recommended and the install failed because it tried to verify the SGA
size to be greater than 32M, but it checked the absolute figure in bytes
and couldn't handle it sized as 50M.

I was just trying to say that the fix lies in the scripts, not some
(perfectly reasonable, it is true) workaround with the init.ora. Jump up
and down on Oracle if needs be, by all means.
(And of course change the init.ora if time is of the essence).
Cheers,

I had to foward this to the Oracle Portal developers, since they
provide these install scripts :-/

Hi Pete,
you also tried to install Portal into 9i?
I've found some further incompatiblitys:
- sqlnet clients < 9.0.0.1 can't connect to a 9i DB ("wrong date
format")
(e.g. the one shipped with 9iAS :-(
- 8.1.7 JDBC Drivers can't connect
(e.g. the one shipped with 9iAS :-(
I've fixed both, but I've still problems with starting the iAS:
I can start the one installed with the 9i, but the one installed with
portal fails :-(
(Sorry right now I havn't got the exact errortext, but it's an issue
with loading some modules into iAS)
If anyone has got more experince with that I would be glad for any
suggestions/pointers.
best regards
holger
I have only installed 9iAS against an 8.1.7 database and also against an
8.1.6 database. On one occasion I needed webcache for a customer and the
apache web server and on the other occasion portal. The database cache
failed on both occasions, for two different reasons. I have not been
impressed so far with the 9iAS. I will keep note of the issues you found
as i will be installing 9iAS against 9i in the next few weeks for a
client.
