Hi,

I am testing Oracle 8.1.6.0.0 on Win2000. I cannot create an instance with
oradim.

>oradim -NEW -SID hbms -INTPWD abcdef -STARTMODE auto -PFILE=fullpath

I get the error DIM-00003 Parameteren mangler et argument (Missing argument
for parameter). Hmm, which parameter??
Checked the services. They are not there. Checked my parameterfile, even
tried with the default oracle supplied parameterfile, which I have already
been used for a starterdatabase. No go.

Oradim.log said 1034: oracle not available.
Well, I deleted the oradim.log just to be sure it was written to, now it is
not created. Shouldnt oradim create this log file if not existant?

The oracle ftp server for patches is timing out. Grrrr...

Any help appreciated
Thanks
Peter Laursen

As far as I can see, you syntax is perfect, so you're not missing anything
there.

I might have suggested errors in the specified PFILE, but I trust you when
you say what you are pointing to here is a pfile that has been successfully
used to start another database, so that can't be it (just check the full
path in case!)

The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is that there are
allegedly a number of bugs in 8.1.6 on W2K, cured by applying the 8.1.6.2
patch. Conceivably this is one of them (though I'd be a bit surprised).

And *really* the only other thing I can think of asking is whether you have
remote_login_passwordfile set to NONE or shared. If so, I might consider
setting it to exclusive and see what happens then.

Try with startmode a (not auto).

According to online docu, it is "a" or "m" when creating, and
"auto" or "manual" when editing.

Haven't a clue why that would be, but here goes nothing.
BTW, you do have administrative priveleges on this NT box,
don't you?

Hi Frank,

What bit of the online docs are you looking at?

I've checked as far back as 7.3, and all the online docs I see say STARTMODE
auto (and that's what's in the DBA course material, too), at the time of
creating the service.

Here's the relevant bit filched from the 8.1.6 on-line docs:

To create an instance...
Use this syntax:
ORADIM -NEW -SID SID | -SRVC SERVICE_NAME [-INTPWD INTERNAL_PWD] -
SHUTTYPE SRVC | INST | SRVC, INST

[-MAXUSERS NUMBER][-STARTMODE AUTO | MANUAL][-PFILE FILENAME]

Example to create an instance called PROD:
C:\> ORADIM -NEW -SID PROD -INTPWD MYPASSWORD1 -STARTMODE AUTO -PFILE
C:\ORACLE\ADMIN\PROD\PFILE\INIT.ORA

Syntax description:
a.. -NEW

Indicates that you want to create a new instance. This is a
mandatory parameter.

a.. -SID SID

The name of the instance you want to create. You must specify either
this parameter or the -SRVC parameter described below.

a.. -SRVC SERVICE_NAME

The name of the service you want to create (OracleServiceSID). You
must specify either this parameter or the -SID parameter described above.

a.. -INTPWD INTERNAL_PWD

The password for the INTERNAL account. The -INTPWD option is not
required. If you do not specify it, operating system authentication is used,
and no password is required. See "Automatically Enabling Operating System
Authentication During Installation" for a description of features.

a.. -MAXUSERS NUMBER

The number of users defined in the password file. The default is 5.

a.. -STARTMODE AUTO, MANUAL

Indicates whether to start the instance automatically or manually at
startup. The default setting is MANUAL.

I think you'll agree this is fairly unambiguous (and it works on my W2K box
here).

I'm sure you've seen what you describe elsewhere, and I'd love to have a
look at it ... but it's not the cause of the problem here, and isn't
generally syntactically true.

Howard and Frank,

Thanks for helping. Shortly after I posted my question I found the answer myself, and cancelled my msg, a bit too late though.

>oradim -NEW -SID hbms -INTPWD abcdef -STARTMODE auto -PFILE=fullpath

The problem was the equal sign after -PFILE. Has to be a space, of course.

That would be oradim (of 8i R2/NT) without any options.
Changed from 8.0.x to the extend that what I posted earlier
is in the output genned. Doesn't work like that it seems;
see what happens with a instead of auto...

Odd then that the training documents for Oracle 8.0.5 also mention only the
use of auto and manual.

What I said; it changed from 8.0:

oradim80:
-EDIT -Edit an instance by specifying the following
parameters:
<snip>
-STARTMODE<auto,manual> -Indicate whether to start the database
automatically or manually at boot time

oradim:
-NEW -SID sid | -SRVC service [-INTPWD password] [-MAXUSERS number]
[-STARTM
ODE a|m] [-PFILE file] [-TIMEOUT secs]
Edit an instance by specifying the following parameters:
-EDIT -SID sid [-NEWSID sid] [-INTPWD password] [-STARTMODE auto|manual]
[-P
FILE filename]

See? With -NEW, startmode has a|m, with -EDIT, it's auto, manual.
Doesn't make a difference, tho - a and auto can be used both.
