I tried to create a bitmap index on a table, something like:

CREATE BITMAP INDEX CREDIT_$BITMAP_JOB_ID ON CREDIT_ADJUST(JOB_ID);

I get the following error message:

ORA-00439: feature not enabled: Bitmapped indexes.

any ideas how to correct this problem? Tanx!

Maybe you should set compatible = 7.3.2.0.0 or greater in init.ora ?
Default value is about 7.0.12 ...

You didn't say what version of Oracle you're running. I seem to recall
that with some versions of Oracle you needed to install the Parallel
Query Option to use bitmap indexes.

Do you have the plain Oracle Server Edition (fka, Workgroup Server) and
not the Oracle Enterprise Server Edition? If so, you cannot create

John,

Thanks for your response and I appreciate your assistance. It is from the cd
labeled “Oracle 8 Version 8.0.4.0.0 for NT” with part # A59447-01. From
that I installed the product “Oracle8 Revision 8.0.4.0.0”, could this be
“Oracle Enterprise Server Edition”? The attached booklet does not say so,
but “Oracle Enterprise Manager” is in the cd.

You do not have the enterprise version.
Enterprise manager is not part of the enterprise version.
(confusing I know)
