utl_file_dir showing up empty

I'm having an issue with using utl_file_dir... Even though I've added
it to the init$SID.ora file and restarted the database, it appears to
be getting set to a blank string (doing a "select * from v$parameter
where name='utl_file_dir'" or using "show parameter utl_file_dir"
returns a row, but there is nothing in the value). Also, the select
shows that the ISDEFAULT value of the parameter is true.

Here's the line I'm using in init$SID.ora

utl_file_dir=/var/opts/testdir

I've tried moving the location to the beginning/middle/end of the
file, adding a / to the end of the directory, and adding quotes around
the path with no luck. I've also tried making a separate file with
only this line in it and using IFILE to include that file... The
init$SID.ora file I'm editing is definitely the one that's being read
(if I make other changes to it, those changes take effect). I've also
tried setting the utl_file_dir to '*', also with no luck.

Has anyone else come across a situation like this?

If it's useful, this is on Oracle9i Release 9.0.1.0.0 running on SuSe

It isn't showing up in his paremeter list after bouncing the db, which is a
different matter than not being able to write to the directory.

Possibly the OP needs to read the concepts manual and understand the "concept" of
spfile to understand that changing parameter in init.ora *might* not have any effect?

Oracle does not care (Atleast until 8.1.7.3), if utl_file_dir is valid
or has permissions at startup. It uses whatever value is specified.
*Only* after startup it will raise error on any call to UTL_FILE
package if directory is invalid or Oracle does not have any
permissions.

Your problem may be related to SPFILE being out of sync from your
PFILE. In 9i, when database is started up by just using "SQL> startup"
command, Oracle uses SPFILE parameters. Read more about new SPFILE
feature in your 9i docs and how to sync your SPFILE and PFILE. In the
meantime, try to force Oracle to startup by exclusively using your
pfile parameters like,

SQL> startup pfile=<Full path and name to pfile>

The version number is *always* useful, and in this case particularly so:
spfiles are used in preference to init.oras (if you have one) as a new
feature in 9i, so you can fiddle with an init.ora for a month of Sundays
and have precisely zero effect on the spfile, where it all counts.

Do a 'show parameter spfile' to verify that you are actually using an
spfile.

Thanks Rauf! That looks like it was the problem... The parameter shows
up properly now!

Guess it's time for me to read a bit more... I'm still fairly new to
using Oracle and have been focused primarily on the development side
of things up until now.
