Hi all,

As I promised, I'm back altho I have not bought a new windows 7.

But I'm on windows 7 and it's behaving itself.

However when I try to run sqldeveloper from a just-installed oracle
11g2 on windows7 prof, it asks of course for java.exe. when I give it
the full path to the java.exe in the jre6 I just downloaded from the
'java' downloads from oracle, I get the above message.

what do I have to do to get this j2se sdk in a place where a java.exe
resides?

Ken, if it's 64 bit machine, you should look into C:\Program Files (x86).
Java is still 32 bit. I had a problem with the 64 bit version of JDK
6.0.29 because SQL*Developer refused to cooperate. It needed a 32 bit
version. BTW, if anyone is interested, SQL*Developers and Oracle JDBC
drivers work perfectly with the "IcedTea" version on freeware Linux
distributions like Ubuntu or Fedora.

I downloaded the 32-bit java on Program files (x86) when sqldeveloper asked me to give it the path to java. Error:

Cannot find a J2SE SDK installed at path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6.

If this is the best the database giant Oracle can manage it's all excrutiatingly amateurish. IMNSHO.

I'm not doing so good myself am I? I meant I downloaded the 32-bit java onto
Program files (x96) and supplied the path to the java.exe when sqldeveloper.exe
asked me for the path to java. Error as specified in prev.

Are you sure you installed the SDK (or JDK) & not the JRE?

I've already replied to this but it's taking a long time appearing.

The answer is yes, I tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit sdk/jdk. when I give sqldeveloper the path to the jdk it simply blanks the entry box; when I give it the path to the jre, then I get the error message. Same behavior 32-bit, 64-bit.

Well you might ask! I went back and found the v.7 SDK and installed THAT
in Program Files (x86). Then I tried sqldeveloper.exe and it presented the
window asking me for the location of the java.exe.

After the re-installation of the v.7 SDK I had two choices of locations for
java.exe - the jdk and the jre. when I supplied the full path-name for the
jdk's java.exe in the box provided (using the browse button to find it) and hit enter, it simply blanked the box and sat there. When I entered the full path-name for the jre, I got our favorite error message.

Is there a document that explains exactly what it wants? There are so many
names floating around - for example the error message says j2se sdk. What the
$I(*&@Y#E is 'j2se'? Does Oracle's left-hand know what its right-hand is doing?

I'm sure the explanation is really simple, like read the documentation fool. Well, maybe I'm not so sure there really IS any documentation explaining exactly what path to what sqldeveloper is looking for.

Not quite ready to give up tho.

Regards and thanks for your replies.

I just installed the 32-bit sqldeveloper and it comes w/ java. when I started
sqldeveloper it came up w/o even asking for java. I was surprised but pleased.
I take back about 1/2 of my disparaging remarks about oracle's design of this
installation process.

I've got a Win7 64 box to play on so I'll give it a go at some point. I
have installed it a couple of times over the years, but never really
used it much as PL/SQL Developer from Allround Automations is so much
better.

It's better but it's not free!

Anyway it all works - and this java being part of/not part of the installation of the server is
prob. going to be eventually if not sooner a non-issue. A temporary glitch. Hopefully.
Thx.
