I'm a Sybase DBA just beginning to learn Oracle administration. I was
wondering if some of you seasoned DBAs out there might be able to tell me
where I can find some good Oracle stuff on the web (tips, tricks, common
mistakes, sample database creation scripts, etc.)?

Thanks,
Aaron

hm, same question, but backwards:
Where would be a good start for oracle dba to learn sybase/ms sql server?

Tanel.

given the relative complexity of the products in question you might want to try
(its very early Saturday moring and it has been a busy week) a first grade
reader. Failing that an Exam Cram book for SQL*Server DBAs would be a good
place to start.

Tanel,
I'm more knowledgeable in Sybase than MS SQL, so that's what I can tell
you about. I can tell you one thing about both: they're easier to
master than Oracle, at least from what I've seen so far. Here are some
web sites I've found to be useful...
http://sybooks.sybase.com
http://www.edbarlow.com/
http://www.euronet.nl/~syp_rob/download.html
http://www.platinum.com.br/news/sybase/sybpost.htm
Hope that helps.

I am a seasoned DB2 DBA who has been learing Oracle the last year or
so in my spare time. My first dealings with Oracle were via the
Transparent Gateway for DB2.

RDBMS is RDBMS from the conceptual point of view.

Here is what has been working for me.

I found and Oracle vs. DB2 Comparison article. I began to XREF the
two. Concepts the same but they go about doing some things
differently. For instance in DB2 RUNSTATS is the same as an Oracle
ANALYZE

Goto Oracle.com and download Oracle and play with it. Nothing like
OJT.

Lurk in this news group. I have learned a ton doing this.

Attend classes. I recently had my first Oracle class.

Buy Oracle DBA 101 book. A big help.

If you know an Oracle DBA watch over their shoulder.

Have a good understanding of the platform you are running on. Oracle
runs on NT, UNIX, and OS/390 among others I am sure. You can't do
anything if you don't know how to use the SHELL.
