Hi,

following situation:

Oracle-Versions: 8i, 9i, 10g
Database-Server: Solaris 9
Backup-Server: Redhat AS4; Kernel 2.6.9-5.EL
Backup-Media: NFS-mount

For our RMAN-Backup we have a NFS-mount on our Database-Server from our
Backup-Server.
Regular the complete Linux-NFS-server get´s stuck when we run our
RMAN-backup in the night.
But every time we try to reproduce this failure, the linux-server
works.
I have already changed different NFS-parameters on the linux-server,
like wsize and rsize... but the server still dies in the night.

Does have anybody an idea??

THX!!

Oracle never fully supported NFS, not for datafiles and not for
backups.
Time to find your Visa or Mastercard and buy extra local storage or get
a tape drive.

I had a similar problem initially because Oracle saw the mount point
as temporary rather than permanent.

Perhaps you have something like:
mount -t nfs 192.168.2.250:/vol/vol2 /mnt

Change to using fstab and an entry such as:
netapp1:/vol/vol2/alpha /u01 nfs
rw,bg,intr,hard,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,noac,nolock,tcp,vers=3 0 0

Get the correct syntax from your vendor that corresponds with your
hardware and operating system version.

Oracle fully supports NFS 3 and above and uses it internally.

I'm not too sure about that. I'm now in a situation where I have to
duplicate a database to a NFS mounted fs using rman.
The restore just hangs forever and the datafiles never come off in
full.
Metaclunk, as pretty much usual, is of no help in resolving this
problem.
So does Oracle support nfs? I don't think so.

Daniel, would you happen to know where there's an Oracle citation that
states that NFS3 is supported?

I'm pretty sure I know everything that I can remember.

I use RMAN with NFS mounts all the time with no problems.

When I experience what you describe, and I have on a few occasions, it
is always due to one of two things:

1. Temporary NFS mount ... not permanent
2. Incorrect mount string which Oracle sees and doesn't trust

For example:

# mount -t nfs 192.168.2.100:/vol/vol0 /mnt
will give RMAN errors but
netapp1:/vol/vol0/alpha /u01 nfs
rw,bg,intr,hard,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,noac,nolock,tcp,vers=3 0 0
does not and works with RAC, RMAN, etc.

Please note the above strings are for a NetApp F810 and may not work
with other hardware or with NetApp and other versions of their O/S.

Will these do?

Dear Daniel,

thank you for your information about your mount-optiions.
We don´t have a Netapp-Filer, but nevertheless I will try it with your
options.

After the test I will report the results.

My options might cause a corruption problem. Verify with your vendor first.

With your mount-options the server still crashs... now i´m really
helpless.
The curios thing is, with a solaris-nfs-server it works.
I read in another forum, that linux makes nasty things regarding NFS...
but unfortunately I don´t know how this was meant.
Does somebody know what is meant with that?

Four your information:

http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/htdocs/vendors.html

There you can find storagesystems which are supported by Oracle.
And our system is not mentioned.

It is nonsense. NFS mounting works perfectly well with Linux. And
if it didn't a lot of servers running Oracle Corp. would have
burned themselves to the ground.

Either open a TAR at metalink or call your vendor and ask for help.
