Hello,

When I try to create a new database with the DBCA (Database
Configuration Assistant), I am able to choose all the configurations
for my new database. However, at the end of the process, when I click
"OK" in order for the DBCA to create the database, nothing happens.
The DBCA just closes. No error messages are displayed.

Note : I have installed Oracle 11g several times. With my first
installation of Oracle, I was able to create a new database with the
DBCA. Then I have uninstalled the software with the OUI (Oracle
Universal Installer). However, with my others installations, I am
unable to create a database.

I use Oracle 11g on Windows Vista Home Basic on my laptop computer.

Someone can help?

Thank you

Alexandre

Yes, before installing Oracle, I have read in the documentation that
Windows Vista Home Basic was not supported. However, I decided to try
it. And at the first installation, everything was ok. My problems
appeared only at the second installation. If it worked for the first
intallation, it should work for the other installation (I think). If
someone has a clue about this problem, I would appreciate to know it.

Thank you

Sorry, no, there are no clues to dispense. The Oracle software is not
certified on Vista Home Edition precisely because the behaviour is
unpredictable.

You're on your own.

Thank you,

I have a free partition. I think I will install Ubuntu and Oracle on
this partition.

I would suggest CentOS. No problems whatsoever.

I would try to use Cent OS or Oracles version of LINUX both are
derivatives of RedHat and both are free downloads as well. The reason
is that you will find RedHat is in the data center more often then
Ubuntu.

Centos 5.2 has a live cd so it's easy to test out if your machine
works :)

Laptops that are completely based on intel chip sets are well
supported. Laptops with NVIDA are ok as well so long they do not have
a broadcom wireless card in it, all though that gets beter also. Even
ATI graphic cards are geting beter since AMD/ATI released specs Radon
of the chip sets.

I would say a laptops are not a big of a problem any more as they used
to be with Linux.

RedHat released version 5.3 not long ago centos has not yet backported
this release, Oracle has done this already so if the live centos5.2
works the you can try oracle's 5.3 build as well.

Finally, before installing Linux, I decided to give it a last try on
Windows Vista Home Basic.
I have uninstalled Oracle 11g from my C:\ drive. And I installed it
once again, but in my 16Go FAT32 free partition (there is not a lot of
disk space, however this installation is for educational purpose
only).
During the installation, I chose the option that create a new database
during the instalation process.
And it worked. I have a database that I am able to connect to with
SQLPlus, Enterprise Manager and SQL Developer.

Now, when I try to create a new database with the DBCA, It still isn't
able to create a new DB. However, this time, I have an error message.

ORA-12560 : TNS Protocol Adapter Error

It seems to be a common error. However, I still haven't found the
solution for this error in my specific environment and context. I am
searching.

Thank you all for your reply.

Using Oracle on a Microsoft platform is enough of a headache without
trying to do so on an uncertified version of Windows.

You must have a lot of spare time on your hands and the patience of a
saint.

Good luck.
