Just when we thought Christmas was over our listener.log starts to give us
all these "gifts".

TNS-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process
TNS-12540: TNS:internal limit restriction exceeded
TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
TNS-00510: Internal limit restriction exceeded
Solaris Error: 12: Not enough space

We are running multiple Oracle 8.0.3 instances on a Sun Ultra 1 (Solaris
2.5.1 with all the patches). When we shut down one instance the TNS problems
go away... however this is not an acceptable solution.

Oracle Worldwide support have unsuccessfully suggested many things... right
down to recompiling Oracle and rebuilding all database instances.

Any ideas or assistance would be appreciated....

Thanks in advance

Vaughan

Hi Vaughan,

have your sysadmin check the /etc/system and increase the maximum
allowable processes. I think it's 'max_nproc'. Check the installation
manual to be sure.

Hi Vaughan,

We had a similar problem which we never "resolved" as such, but
we found doing a "reload" inside lsnrctl fixed the problem ...
not great but it doesn't boot everyone off...

How often is it occurring ? We haven't had more than 1 or 2 per year
(7.2 and 7.3)

Hmm - that last error message (from Solaris) makes me wonder... "Not
enough space" - could you be out of virtual memory, by any chance? Check
that you've got at least as much swap space as you've got real RAM. Might
be a kernel parameter too, though - something to do with memory limits
per user...

Good luck! - rasmus

Check the /tmp disk while you are at it.

Ahh yes this again I so happily recall such messages on our Ultra 1
also. What we ended up doing was creating a 60 meg swap file and
ading that to our swap space. That did not total alleviate the
problem. So we went out and did what every good DBA does and put more
memory in the machine so we went from 128 meg of ram to 256 meg of
ram. I think this did fix the problem but I can not be sure because
some guys in a truck drove through the wall of my office and made off
the Ultra 1 2 days after memory upgrade. But in those 2 days we had
no problems.

Thanks all for your help...

After adding another swap file to the system we have had 2 weeks without
incident
(touch wood).

We thought we had enough, however the occassional load must have been too
much.
