I can help you as I had the same experience of installing oracle8i(817)
in a P4 machine. The problem is the JVM of oracle817 may not support
P4.
Salution: (1) Download jdk1.1.8 from java.sun.com and install it on your
machine.
(2) Copy oracle817 Disc into your harddisk such as e:\oracle817.
(3) Copy the whole directory of JVM of just installation into
e:\oracle817\stage\Components\oracle.swd.jre\1.1.7.30\1\DataFiles\Expanded\j
re\win32, that is using sun JVM overwriting this JVM.

Good luck.

I tried jdk1.1.8 but Oracle setup still does not start.
I can force the Oracle installation by applying the follwoig steps:

1) Copy the Insatll folder from CD to loacl C: drive, for example to c:\temp
2) Modify the oraparam.ini, to read the full path of SOURCE, JRE_LOCALTION
and OUI_LOCATION
from the CD
3) Change the JRE_MEMORY_OPTION line to add "-nojit" argument
4) Lunch setup.exe from the C: drive

In this case the Installtion goes up to 100% and then fail at the
installation of Net Esay configuarion.

Even in this case I can not use Oracle. Too bad.

Question:

Did Oracle certify 8.1.7 for Windoze XP?

Why on earth do you want to install it on an uncertified platform?
Windoze has never been 100% downwards compatible.

I think WindowsXP is not the main problem here. There is some thing to do
with Pentium 4. The same Installation problem of Oracle 8.1.7 ( I haven't
tried other versions) exists on Windows 2000 running on Pentium4 as well.

After installation of Oracle, check the dir of "Program
Files"/oracle/jre/1.1.7, make sure the JVM of this dir is jdk1.1.8.

Does that mean it works with WinXP as released last Thursday? This is the OS
in question

I'd guess it probably will install if the JRE 1.17 that comes with 8.17 is
replaced with the 1.18 that works correctly with p4's. However 8.1.7 on XP
is an uncertified combination at the mo.
