I am evaluating the Executive Viewer from Temtec and am looking for
benchmarks, criteria, etc. My initial view of the product is satisfactory,
but I would compare it to the XL client from Essbase than Wired. Maybe the
version I have is not "fully loaded". Then again, I have probably only
scraped the surface.

We are a Wired house, but I am looking to get feedback from a comparative
perspective.

Thanks mucho, MEK

Mark,

I think you have made a hasty assessment of Executive Viewer.

I have implemented Wired, Excel VBA and Executive Viewer
on a number of occasions. My preference as a consultant
looking for successful implementations rather than extensive
consulting jobs, is for Executive Viewer. The tool is focussed
on Essbase and nothing else. It supports almost every
feature of version 5 (and version 6).

At first look (after a painless installation), the first impression
may be that you have a simple spreadsheet with basic navigation
tools and nothing else. Dig a little deeper and discover that most
user reporting requirements can be satisfied with no programming
and usually with a few minutes work. The best thing is that "saved"
workbooks and sheets can be shared on a company or personal, are
dynamic to changing models and parameters (such as current month)
and are open for users to go further with their analysis.

The Windows and Web version operate in exactly the same way, with
exactly the same functionality.

If you have any specific questions, let me know

I have used Temtec for awhile and found that there are some major
differences between the two products. One big thing I noticed is Executive
Viewer offers all of the functionality on the web as their desktop version.
Temtec addresses the need for complex production-type printing. There is a
great deal of flexibility when printing in Temtec. The user can format the
report for how they want it to look down to cell level.
Similar to Wired, the drag and drop features in Temtec is also excellent.
It allows for an ease of use inter-face. The end user can move dimension
and members where they would like them and make sense in their sheet. A
very powerful feature we noticed with Temtec is that it offers asymmetrical
reporting. This allows us to only show columns our users need to see. For
example, I can easily create a report that shows current year actual and
budget and last year actual. I found that this is a major requirement for
most power users. Temtec offers the most for the power user. You are able
to create complex calculations on the web. Temtecs calculations are very
easy to use and offer extensive flexibility . Our users (power and casual)
are very happy with Executive Viewer deployed on the web.

Try www.temtec.com. You can register to download the components
there. Perhaps you can find an evaluation CD, too. A consulting
friend was able to obtain one.

Mark, I think Pendse & Creeth will put an evalution of the Executive Viewer
in their OLAP report (www.olapreport.com). Since an evaluation of Wired is in
their already, you might want to compare both evalutions made in the
OLAP-report. I have used both products and I do agree with you that they are
not completely comparable, since they are focused on different area's of
reporting. Wired is more focused on EIS reporting with the ability to build
pages with graphs and tables together in one page and being able to restrict
the user to a specific amount of choices to change his point of view.
Executive Viewer is more focused on Ad-hoc and formatting reporting in table
of simple graph format (personally I don't believe in all those fancy full of
different types of data graphs, but who am I to say) with good formatting
options. And..... it is easy to print, which I hate to say it, is rare in
front-end country. One big difference between the two is that EV works
directly on Essbase, while Wired transfers the data from Essbase to its own
proprietary database and reports from there. This has some performance
consequences esspecially on large outlines. EV still performs pretty well but
wired might choke. (I seen it happen a couple of times). As a consultant I
like EV better because it enables me to quickly evaluate the results of my
modeling efforts. (Setting up and linking to the database is done in the wink
of an eye) Also, when I have to check the data, it is very easy in switching
viewpoints, drilling down and up and selecting and finding members and in
creating on the fly calculations derived from existing database members. Mind
you, all these things are possible in Wired too, but they are just that
little bit more convenient in EV. However I do not have to build EIS
screens................... Good luck, Louis In article
