I am helping a software-design group who wants to build a system with
the DB-2 running on the server and a bunch of some PC and/or NT clients
(probably with SQLServer). The general idea is using the ODBC standard
and by the groups' knowledge (incl RFTM) it should work just fine.
The 'desision-makers', however, don't trust this idea; they want to
use CICS-clients on PC/NT side and forget about ODBC.

I'd like to get some answers from those of you who really did
something like this or at least know some installations/applications/sites
where DB-2 on the Big Blue is willing to talk with clients via ODBC.
Any ideas, suggestions, opinions or even references will be gratefully
appreciated.

Hello Davor,

One solution to connect PC/NT or Windows 95 Clients via ODBC to DB2 is
to use StarSQL ODBC/DRDA driver. This driver is shipped with SNA Server
(limited use to only one connection) and permits to any ODBC application
to access to DB2 (DB2 should reside on MVS, VS, VSE, but can also be
DB2/400, DB2/CS on UNIX or DB2-2 on NT). You can also use another
gateway
instead of SNA Server to acces your DB2 (please contact me for further
infos).
The only thing to do is to use DRDA protocol on your DB2 system.

Some of french customers are using this king of ODBC driver, and some of
them
choose starSQL ODBC/DRDA driver instead of using IBM DDCS gateway.
Another one prefered ODBC driver instead of CICS. His choice was based
on the
easy installation of the ODBC driver (in comparison with DDCS client),
and on
the use of Excel and Query (he got the direct connection to his DB2
system).

Another thing I can tell you is that two french customers have choosen
StarSQL
ODBC/DRDA driver in a replication system between DB2 and MS SQLServer.
This solution
is more esay to configure and to manage than others (all the
administration is on the
NT server where SQL Server resides) and faster.

Contact me if you need further informations.
