We are looking for a dependable solution for Database Failover
and Fault Tolerance. We do not have a common storage
or a Storage Array to implement the NT Clustering and establish
the recommended SQLServer Active/Active-Passive Failover config.
At this time we have 2 NT/SQLServers m/c in a domain which act
as primary and secondary DBs. The database devices have been setup
identically and the native Transactional replication has been tested
with success.
In case of a disaster on the primary the configs have to be switched
to get the system up, which is manual.
There is a product CA's SurviveIT which claims to be an automatic
failover solution where the data is replicated/syncronized and the
switch is done automatic. Has anyone used this product? Would you
recommend? It seems to be an Service based solution where there is no
hardware, standby involved.
Any other products/solution in the same line..

Before you buy.
Q. Can I use disk level mirroring software with SQL Server to provide a
backup system?
A. In theory you can, and vendors like Vinca, Octopus and Double Take all claim
to work with SQL Server. However when I and others have tested some of these
products by powering down systems and yanking out network cables rather than
doing planned fail-overs then we have sometimes seen database corruption.
If you want to use one of these products then test it properly in your
environment - power the primary server down, pull out network cables etc. when
there is a heavy update load occuring and make sure that the backup server
recovers SQL Server correctly. Run dbcc's to make double sure.
