When I start SQL Server Management Studio I get this error that start with
Exception Text see below. Inspite of this error when I start , everything
else seems to work. I can connect to the database from Visual studio and do
a select of a table.

It's just that I don't like to have an error when I start a program.
I have google but haven't found any solution to this problem.
I wonder if you have some suggerstion that could work ?

Here is all the files that belong to SQl Server 2008
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 10.0.1600.22
((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414 )
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 2007.0100.1600.022
((SQL_PreRelease).080709-1414 )
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 6.0.6002.18005
(lh_sp2rtm.090410-1830)
Microsoft MSXML 3.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.4241
Operating System 6.0.6002

The last thing to do is to reinstall SQL Server 2008.

That's the RTM version of SQL Server Management Studio. I would suggest
that you start with installing the most recent Service Pack for
SQL Server.

Although the error suggests that the file
C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL
Server\100\Tools\Shell\RegSrvr.xml

has been damaged in some way.

Tony, I have to agree with Erland. The 2008 version of SSMS has several issues including sometimes failing to connect using a valid username/password combination. Apply at least SP1 to get past that.

But depending on where your Registration file came from you may have to recreate the entries manually since it is possible the problem is how the file was written.

Do you think it's possible in any way to fix my problem without reinstalling
SQL Server 2008.

If Tony renames that file - while Management Studio isn't running -
would you expect then that Management Studio will run better, and
will re-create a new version of the file - having "forgotten"
any SQL Server registered with it? Or will it go badly wrong?

Of course he'll need to have any passwords required to register
the server in Management Studio again.

I say rename the file, in order to be able to put it back where it
was, if that is necessary.

Do you mean that I can rename this file
C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL
>> Server\100\Tools\Shell\RegSrvr.xml and that will fix my problem.

Yes. First of all, in the SQL Server program group, there is the SQL Server
Installation Center (in the folder Configuration Tools). There is a Repair
option.

And obvioously, it is worth trying to rename that file to see what happens.

But don't forget to install the service pack.

In the SQL Server Installation Center there is an Maintenance alternative
which I select.
When I have done that I select the Repair alternative.

Now I get a question from a dialog with name "Choose Folder"
Browse for SQL Server 2008 Installation Media.
When I select the CD where I have the SQL Server 2008 I get the following
error
"D:/is not a valid installation folder."

I'm must doing someting wrong here.

Now here is what I have done.
1. Run setup.exe from my SQL Server 2008 CD
2.Select Maintenance
3.Select and start Repair
4.When I recive the question "Specify the instance of SQL Server to repair"
I selected MSSQLSERVER
5.When the repair was finished with instance MSSQLSERVER where all was
passed I started the Repair all over again and selected the SQLEXPRESS.
6. I rebooted my PC and started SQL Server management Studio but to my
surprise I got the same
error that I hade before.

So inspite having repair the SQL Server 2008(both instances) I still have
the same problem.
One thing that is strange is that why is the heading of the error that is
displayed when I start SQL Server management Studio
have Microsoft .NET Framework when the problem really is to start the SQL
Server management Studio without any error.

I tried to attach a printscreen image but the I got error. So I will show
how the error will look like in this way instead.
I have also copied the whole error message below
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It works now. I can't understand why.
The only thing I did as I remember is to verify and click on temp folder in
AppData\Local\Temp

very strange.

Do you get the error when you are installing SSMS, or when you start SSMS?
In the latter case, did SSMS work in the past?
