We use Erwin as a data modeling tool. It's quite nice. Allows you to
show relationships, cardinality, etc. It spits out SQL to build your
first cut physical model after building your logical model. There are a
number of good books and courses about data modeling. And there are a
number of different methods. Where I work we use IDEF1. A really good
book on IDEF1 modeling is "Designing Quality Data Bases with IDEF1X
Information Models" by Thomas A. Bruce ISBN 0-932633-18-8. IDEF1X, by
the way, is a method for creating a normalized data model. A good IDEF1X
course is offered by D.Appleton Company though I don't have any of their
literature handy. I'm sure others can provide you with information also.
I don't believe there is currently a newsgroup for data modelers though I
think something is in the works.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for finding more information
about data modeling tools and training or to a news group related to this
topic?

Thanks.

Over then last few years
I've used ADW and Bachman.
I personally find Bachman easier as a Data Model tool,
and ADW easier/richer for Process.
YMMV.
