I am connecting to an app remotely. I put a breakpoint in some code. I then run the form/code and it stops at the breakpoint. But pressing my F8 key does nothing. I might get a new window with other unrelated stuff when pressed. So I have to go to the menu and press Debug, Step Into using my mouse. I'd like to just hit the f8 key and step thru the code.

The same thing happens with my Del key. I press the Del key and it does nothing. No deleting of the text.

Any idea why the key I press does not work?

On my PC, the F1 would not work when I highlighted the word MsgBox. No help. I came across a solution (for me at least) that said to press the FN key plus the Function key. I did so and all of a sudden the Help key worked. I press FN + F8 and I now step thru my code in debug mode. Yeah.

On a lot of laptop these days, the f1-f12 keys have little "icons" underneath to do things like change brightness, volume level, toggle wi-fi etc.

So, a lot of laptops in fact "default" to the function keys being "shifted" to the other keys. To get the actual f1-f12 keys, you have to hold down the FN key. Normally the FN key has to be held to get at the "shifted" options you see for the function keys.

On my Lenovo laptop, in the BIOS settings, there is a option to toggle this feature. I togged that feature "back" to what my laptops in the past used. So, now to change brightness, volume etc., I have to hold down the FN key, and NOT have to touch or hold anything down to just use the function keys.

However if on your local computer you don't need to hit/hold down the FN key to get the f1-f12 keys to work normal, then you should not have to do this for remote sessions either. I have to think that your local computer is the issue/problem, and not the fact of the remote session.

Quite "interesting" that fewer and fewer people use function keys in their applications now. With tablets, and applications supporting touch, we see less and less use of Function keys these days. But for developers, that is a different story.

On desktop machines, I tend to find the F keys work fine, but on laptops, I see VERY often the default is "reversed", and you have to hold down some "FN" key to get the actual F keys to work as normal. As noted, on my laptop, I restored the settings to what I consider "normal".

Hi Albert, yeah, I didn't even notice the FN key until a couple of days ago. I did have a problem with the function keys until I read about the FN key. But...I still have a problem at times with the DEL key. Any insite?

Hum, no idea. There are 2 delete keys. Perhaps the main delete key also requires the FN key to be held down. If that is the case, then I would "disable" this whole FN key switch that is going on here.

This seems like a particular "hardware" setup in regards to the given computer you have - not a "general" computer issue. So, can't really offer much here as a solution.

You were spot on, Albert. If I press the FN key and the Del key next to the numeric keypad it fails. However, it does it correctly on Del next to the Function keys. Yeah.

Hello guys, reading this did not help me directly , but prompted me to Google the right question.
On my Dell Inspiron 7400 , debug has always worked perfectly - F8 single stepping in XL debug!
My charging port or has a bent pin and despite the charger powering the machine , my battery was not charging.
I replaced the battery and had the same problem with a new one. I bought a USB-C charger and use the Thunderbolt 4 port and the ne battery is charging - as will the old one I suspect - but I have a spare so for less than £50 I am back in business.

I messed with the BIOS to force the machine to charge the battery when investigating the problem!
I set it to charge from 65% up to 90% and of course it charged to 90% whereas it used to charge to 100%.

The bottom line is that I reset the BIOS to factory settings - and ever since when I use F8 in debug it goes to the Screen Display! I can single step clicking F8 with the mouse , or by FN and F8 together, as you all found above.

TO SINGLE STEP WITH USING F8 (+ ALL FUNCTION KEYS) YOU CAN TOGGLE THE FN KEY DEFAULT ACTION.

On my DELL it is FN KEY and ESCAPE together!! I may have accidentally done that or it is the factory default?
