I usually add buttons to my forms for record navigaton and form exit.
Never any problems, until now. Since a few days, if I add one or more
buttons and close the form, I get an error message saying

"This form or report contains changes that are incompatible with the
current database format. The form or report was not saved.

In order to save your changes, you must remove any layouts that have
empty cells in them and/or set the HasModule property for the form to
No."

Setting HasMOdule to No will save the form, but then the buttons are
dead.

Forms with existing buttons work fine, so it must be a problem with the
saving procedure.

I have run Office 2013 Setup and done a repair, followed by the usual
and time consuming updates. No effect.

Can anyone help, please?

What is the code for saving? People often use
docmd.RunCommand acCmdSaveRecord
or
Me.Dirty = False
in the button for saving records. What code do you have?

I don't use any code as such, Patrick. I just switch from design view to
form view and close the form, which wil then ask me if I want to save
the changes.

Always worked correctly, until a few days ago. A new and devious MS
uopdate, possibly?

Hi Sam,

just read the error message. Remove any layouts in designer mode before
saving the form or convert the database into a newer database format.
Forms with layouts containing empty cells are not supported in the older
db formats before Access 2007.

You correctly assume that I use an older format in Access 2013, Ulrich.
I usually do my databases in Access 2003 format.

I'm probably uncommonly thick, and certainly inexperienced in Access
tricks. So forgive me for asking: how do I recognise empty cells?
All fields on the form exist in the relevant table, so that can't be
what is meant by the error message.

Open your affected form in design view and press tab to select one
control after the other. In the property window you can see the given
name for the selected control or 'EmptyCell'. Select the layout to which
the empty cell belongs to and remove the layout. Then it should be
possible to save the form.

Ulrich, you found the solution. Apparently an empty cell [I never put it
there] had crept into the form header. Removed it and everything works
as intended. Thanks very much! Diolch yn fawr!
