Hi all
Have we got many Aussies going to the conference in Kansas?
We could do something special - host a cricket match, show the some real
football - with beer and meat pies, some maybe even bag a kiwi or two - byo
Akubras.

Cheers,
Armand

Hi Armand,

            Soccer is not football!

What Paul means is Australian Rules Football.

Sorry Paul, I wont be at Kansas. But if it makes you feel better I'm going to Ireland to watch the second test of the International Rules game at Croke Park. In the mean time, I take the missus down to the park and spend an hour kicking stab passes at her. The squirrels seem to enjoy the show.

Hi Martin,

How can a game that is predominantly played with the HANDS be called FOOTBALL.

Soccer IS Football !!

For those of us who will be at the Conf. might I suggest that rather than indulge in any over strenuous activities in Kansas, we simply discuss the merits of the international sport of football versus insular derivatives played in Australia and the USA. It will be far more entertaining even if the result is a foregone conclusion.

There are none so blind as those that cannot see!

Is the game of Cricket played with Crickets?

Do you use a wombat to play the game of Wom.

I think not!

Marty et al,

I have another point to make that backs up Peter's rational for the merits of Aussie Rules being termed "Football".  This comes more from a fans point of view.  The typical Aussie Rules supporter is also required to show much dexterity with their hands whilst their feet are simply obliged to support the rest of their body whilst standing on the hallowed terraces.  I of course refer to the famed Aussie art of eating a cold "Meat" pie (pea floater or ketchup optional) from one hand, skulling a warm beer (that's EuroFizz for the brits) from the other hand whilst avoiding any spillage from either product!

Now, the typical English football fan (none of your prawn munching hospitality nonce's mind you) has to show dexterity with both hand and foot.  The hands have to cope with making gestures to the ref, opposing fans and the local constabulary that would have an origami expert in awe whilst the feet are required to stamp, kick, volley and ruck any of the afore mentioned groups whilst the hands/arms are also used in a windmilling action to beat of any attacks from once again, the afore mentioned group!

I think you can now see that from a fans view point, the traditional game of Association Football is far more worthy of the "Football" tag than Aussie Rules, Rugby Union, that other Rugby game, American Football or cross country tiddlywinks ;-)

Martin,
Clearly you are struggling here. Is Wom another game you guys invented? Do
you use Roo's to play Kanger or Possums to play Pos. Granted the Eton Wall
Game is not played with Wallabies but I think that may not be relevant.

I can see a whole new fringe event for this conference. Bring it on....

Gang,

Although I'm primarily a hockey player and an in-line marathon
skater, I have played a few seasons of "soccer", and I'm OK
in the back half.

Cheers,
