Heads up re Ingres 9.3

upgrading to Ingres Datbase 9.3 that neither they nor I was aware of.
As it is a bit of a show-stopper, some of you may want to know about
it.
Buried in the release notes it says, "Ingres 9.3 is a limited release
targeted at *new application development* [emphasis added by me] on
Linux and Windows only. Ingres 9.3 is not an upgrade path for existing
Ingres installations or applications."
Furthermore it has just been explained to me that Ingres Corp is not
going to follow the normal 'Enterprise Support' path for the 9.3
release and will probably drop support for it when r10 comes out.
The practical consequence of this is that 9.2 is still the latest
fully-supported Enterprise release. There is no need to upgrade from
9.2 to 9.3, and very good reasons not to.

moving to 64-bit Linux. We have been planning to move to 9.3 since we
started seriously working on the project, as 9.3 has been available in
a variety of forms (including on marginal platforms, such as PowerPC
Mac OSX) for quite some time now (e.g. the copyright notice on the 9.3
I run on my PowerBook is dated 2007).
This is the first time this particular chestnut has been presented,
and I have to say I am not happy in the slightest. At the UKIUA,
during the discussion over what the next version of Ingres would be
(9.4 or 10.0), it was mentioned that 9.3 would only be targeted at
Windows and Linux rather than all of the normal supported platforms,
but I don't recall it being said that 9.3 wouldn't have proper release
status.
It also doesn't sit well with the current front page blurb on Ingres'
web site, which includes such banners as "Ingres Database 9.3 Can Get
You There" and exhortations to "Get the New Ingres Database 9.3". It
*doesn't* say "Ingres Database 9.3 Can Get You Some Of The Way There",
or "Get the New Ingres Database 9.3 So Long As You Don't Want To Do
Anything Serious With It".
So, questions :
- If customers are not to treat 9.3 as a migration path, why is there
a migration guide for 9.3 available ?
- If 9.3 is meant for new development only, why is it being touted on
the web site fo encourage migration from other open source databases ?
- What is the point of a release that is for new development only if
customers aren't supposed to be upgrading to it ?
I have a couple of other questions in mind that are probably best
posed in private, but I will say I think the release of 9.3 has been
very badly managed and promoted.

setting up Ingres 9.3. When I got to ABF and Report writer, I
began to experience serious error messages regarding catalogue incompitability.
Then I saw the three 9.3 emails, I knew inside that I was doomed. A
few hours later, I got confirmation
from the service desk. 9.3 should have never been released.

Ingres 9.3 is focused on new customer and partner opportunities that
need the application development and Liferay support functionality that
is offered in this release. It is only available on the linux and
windows platforms and will have a limited life cycle support policy. The
five year enterprise support will coincide with the Ingres 9.2
Enterprise Support date which is December 31, 2013. There will be no
extended or Obsolescence Support offered for the Ingres 9.3 release.
Ingres 9.2 is the terminal release for the Ingres 9.X release and
Extended Support and Obsolescence Support will be available for this
release only. Customers or Partners that chose Ingres 9.3 will be
required to migrate to Ingres 10.x by December 31, 2013.

number for APPLICATION_DEVELOPMENT_1 in the 'ii_dict_modules' system
catalogue at a weird value ('-5'). If you manually update the
catalogue to have a version number of 5, ABF and Report Writer will
start working again.
Mind you, given what we know now, I'm not sure it's really worth it...

Can I suggest your wording be dumbed down a bit for us techno propeller
heads. Maybe a quick white paper or something.
It is not clear that there is no upgrade path from 9.2 to 9.3, nor that 9.3
is missing important components like ABF. Our customers don't really care
which version ingres they are running as long as they are supported.
Its unfortunate that the product was labelled 9.3 when it is not really part
of the 9.x series.

Yes I noticed the same thing just today, while updating the Ingres
information in the Wikipedia article -Comparison of relational database
management systems- - see http://tinyurl.com/yj4auwc.
I know Ingres had stated previously that future 9.x releases would be
for Linux and Windows only, but I guess this could have be stated more
explicitly in their press release and on the Ingres website.
