User locks (compare dbms_lock under Oracle)

Is there any possibility to maintain some kind of user locks, that means,
locks that are not removed when committing the transaction?
Under Oracle, this can be done using the standard package DBMS_LOCK.
We are using Informix 7.3 under WinNT and Solaris.
