It turns out that Q+E does sell the informix ODBC driver seperately. (did you
all catch that word....'sell'). Yup.......it costs about $99/per PC. Site or
concurrent licenses are NOT available. (smells like an Informix kick back
situation going on here)
Did you all know: on page 4-3 of the configuration guide for I-Net5.01 for
windows it says (and I quote)
"Client Windows applications that work with INFORMIX-NET PC Version 4.1
(such as INFORMIX-ESQL/C for DOS Version 4.1, Powerbuilder, and ODBC
applications) can also work with INFORMIX-NET for Windows Version 5.01."
This is very missleading. It suggests that all "ODBC applications" can work
with I-Net 5.01 for windows. The truth is: It will work, but only after you go
through the rigamaroll of getting the ODBC driver from another source.
I have called my sales rep at Informix and wanted an OFFICIAL complaint
registered against Informix for not having the ODBC driver for thier I-net5.01
for windows product AND placing missleading text in the manual. I had to
CONVINCE the sales rep that Informix should get off thier asses (like Oracle
did) and make one and distribute it for free. When all was said and done the
sales rep in question could do nothing but agree. Here is the message I got
back from that person:
"........I am forwarding your concern about ODBC built in drivers to the
Product Manager for Connectivity Products. I will let you know what I find
out."
I will post the results here.
It would be a big help if other people here in this news group, who also have
network concerns, were to complain to Informix in similiar ways. It's a great
product, but this could be a major downfall for them. It also could be worse
for companies relying on Informix products.
thanks for listening, joe

Well consider buying an ODBC Driver from us, then :-)
No it's not free, but we have to fund our development somehow. It does
*NOT* require I-NET. More information from in...@visionware.co.uk.

Ditto.
The absence of ODBC from shipped tools + the lack of ODBC support in some
of the tools offerings (eg HST) gives the wrong message : only use the tools
if you have an Informix database.
The press releases suggest Mr Informix's New Era marks a re-emphasis by the
company on its tools offerings. What better way to make it clear that the
tools are industry leaders than by allowing (strike that - read encouraging)
the use of those tools against the competitor's b/ends. IMHO, shipping ODBC
with the product would go some way to achieving this.
[step from soap box]

For all my usual critical comments on Informix you have me confused here.
I've just received the NT server product for review and in the box with it
was v1.2 of the Q+E Informix drivers for ODBC. The label on the disk is
an Informix label so I would say that they are shipping the product.

Ian,
You are right. ODBC drivers are included in the NT product server, but that
is because you purchased an actual NETWORK product not a database tool.
Informix does not ship ODBC drivers with any of it's database PC tools. THAT
is mine and others comlaint. It is a fact officialy recognized by Informix.
and something which needs to change in order for Informix to stay ahead in the
PC tools market.
