I'm considering a purchase of DB2 2.1 for Solaris, and I have a few
questions. I have experience in using DB2/2 (DB2 for OS/2), and would
like to know how the two implementations compare with each other.
Mostly, I'm interested in whether or not installation and maintenance
in the Solaris implementation is as simple and straight-forward as the
OS/2 implementation.
I also have experience in using Oracle7 on OS/2, AIX, and Solaris, and
it was a real nightmare compared to DB2/2. The one example I use to
compare Oracle7 and DB2 for OS/2 is that it took me over a week to get
Oracle7 up and running, but it only took me two days to get DB2 up and
running, and that was only because I didn't have the installation
guide (it was an evaluation copy from the IBM Developer Connection).
Is the Solaris version this easy to install?
I'm also interested in what paths are available to interface to the
Solaris server. On a related note -- does the Solaris server license
include 5 client licenses like the OS/2 release does? Is the client
software included? Back to the original question -- as far as I can
figure, there are five different methods to access the server. In my
situation, I am providing access to the database via the web. The
methods I think are available are: Java, the DB2 SDK, shell/CGI
scripts using db2 client software, Perl for DB2 (not sure if this
exists), and the DB2 WWW interface.
I have/had a copy of the DB2 WWW interface for OS/2 when it was made
available for evaluation, but never had a chance to really look at
it. The only two methods I'm really sure I could make work are the
SDK and shell scripts.
Anyway, I'd appreciate any comments on the Solaris DB2 server,
especially answers to my questions.
Thanks.

DB2 for Solaris is pretty much the same as DB2 for OS/2
(same code base, some differences due to operating system differences).
On OS/2 you don't (yet) have raw device support, but it is available
on the Solaris or you can choose to use files instead.
Installation is somewhat different from OS/2, but it is 'native'
to the Sun.
In short, if you are familiar with DB2 for OS/2 and familiar with
the Solaris, getting DB2 for Solaris going should not be onerous.
DB2 for Solaris Server license includes support for 5 clients.
Interfaces:
- The SDK (choice of static/dynamic embedded SQL or Call Level Interface
/ ODBC.
- DB2 WWW interface is available which uses CGI interface to connect the
Web browsers to DB2. The Solaris version is in beta, dowloadable
from the net.
- Perl for DB2 interface is available -- you can pick it up from
any CPAN site.
- Java/JDBC interface to DB2 is not yet available.
