I am looking for some information about using the application
FILE MAKER Pro from Clarence in connection with MS ACCESS and / or
MS EXCEL (esp. import/export of Data between these apps)
Is there any manuals, or guides concerning this subject ?
please write to carl...@hotmail.com

Many thanx in advance !

well, fmp4 imports/exports real nice. easier than access :)

it will export to a flat html file with just a click.
or you can export/import tab or comma deliminated easily.
I found that much easier than the access hassle. it's almost
like mr. bill doesn't *want* access to import/export (??).

btw, so far I find fmp a little weird, though. in converstion
I found out that while it is relational, and I can do anything
I can think of, easily, it doesn't conform to the classic
theoretical definition of relational.

it doesn't use tables, queries, the same way. there is no sql.
but maybe sql is coming?

why is this crossposted all over the world???

I use both ACCESS and FMPRO, and to export between them I use the "tab
separated text" file format. It works ok, but if you are importing into
a new database table then you lose the names of the fields. If its an
existing table there is no problem. You don't even have to have the
fields in the same order in both databases because FMPRO lets you
specifyt the order on both import and export. ACCESS probably does too,
but I haven't made sure of that. Note that ACCESS defaults to exporting
using the "comma separated value" format, which FMPRO can also read, so
you could try that as well.

I gave access a try, and had real problems. years ago I did some
queries, scripts, etc in paradox for dos (?3.0?) so had some experience
with import/export etc.

just nothing seemed to work. I'd set up a relationship, but the queries
seemed very hard to set up. then I'd get the data, but it struck me as
hard to export as tab-deliminated for some reason, don't recall.

fmp is nice and "gui", looks great. I just don't understand why they
use a "file" system, why not just use tables, queries like the rest
of the world? just creates confusion, IMHO

normally I don't cross-post, but this is a follow up.

FMPRO's Merge format in the Export As is a perfect solution. the *.MER is a
comma delimited file with the Field Names as a Header record in exported
File.
