Hello, I am not able to get a clear answer from Microsoft on what sort of
windows 2000 server licenses, over and above the 5 user license we already
have, we will need. We plan on running Filemaker Pro 6.0 on a Windows 2000
server, giving about 70 remote users the ability to create and access
records using Webpublishing.

Answers ranged from no additional licenses, as it is a web based
application, to a license for each concurrent session you want to support,
the "per server licensing mode" to a license for each remote user, the "per
seat licensing mode".

We will have 70 remote users so it could get quite costly if we have to go
the per seat mode.

Thanks,

Charlie

So long as the clients are accessing through a browser, I can't see why
they'd need any kind of license at all, other than for the browser. You'd
only need the licenses if you were serving Filemaker files, not web pages,
across a network using Filemaker Server.

Hey,

In addition, You wouldnt need any additional Server seat licences because
filemake uses its own protocol above that of Win2K Server. So dont bother
paying MS for anything unless they need access to the server itself, but you
need to get the FM Client Licences.

Hi I spoke to Filemaker pro and they told me that if I got the 999.00
unlimited version of 6.0, I could have as many people accessing FMP as the
server would support. Does this make sense?

Yes, if you understand that "accessing" means accessing through the web,
using either Instant Web publishing or custom web publishing. The
"Unlimited" designation means that there is no limit in number of IP
accesses in web serving, unlike regular FMP.

No, if you thought it meant you could install FMP on as many desktops as
you want, and access the solution through a LAN or WAN hookup.

I've spoken sternly to FMI about their misleading nomenclature and how
many people misunderstand the positioning of the product line.

They keep insisting Marketing knows best. ;)

If this is correct, then nil is the answer.
FileMaker Unlimited (which is the product you will need) allows
as many people web access to your systems as you wish and
doesn't impact on the number accessing the Win2K server, as
FileMaker deals with the web requests, not Win2K.

You don't.
