Has anybody got a solution to stop the Dialup Networking window appearing
when connecting with TCP and workgroup. Pervasive has an article which says
that this is a problem with the way TCP works. Switching the connection to
never dial is more of an hassle than cancelling the the dialup.

No solution.
BTW It's not the way of TCP, it's the way of Windows having total
disregard to it's environment. Windows just assumes that everything
that's not netbios has to be on the internet (although, they probably
put in an exception for MSSQL also...). Maybe some day someone will
write a new winsock that can be told either which ports to look for on
the internet and/or which ports to look for on the LAN; or maybe
they'll make it smart enough to look at the target IP address first...
