I am a long time user if Smithware's DDF Builder and like many of the
features, but many of these don't exist in PCC (although many other
features do!). So I set out to write my own DDF editor with all the
best bits of DDF Builder and PCC.

Is there really a need for this kind of utility or am I on my own?

If others think this might be useful, let me know and I'll tell you the
features I have embedded, and I'm sure there are many new ideas I can
add.

TIA,

I think it would be extremely useful. I used DDF builder and loved the
product. PCC was horrible in the original release of P2000, finally got to
be a pretty good tool with service pack 2, but it looks like they broke it
again with SP3.

I would be very interested to hear more about your utility, and I've seen
many posts on this newsgroup asking for help.

We (the Utah Department of Health) have been using Btrieve/Pervasive for
many years and believe the lack of good DDF tools is by far the weakest
feature of the product line.

We also use DDF Builder. Unfortunately, it does not run well under
Windows 2000. We have tried the various Pervasive tools (DDF Ease, the
PCC tools, etc.) and have found them to be virtually useless due to
unreliability and poor design.

As far as we can tell, there are currently no good DDF editing tools at
all. We have thought about trying to write our own, but have not had
time.

I was in Austin last year at a class, and suggested that Pervasive
revive the DDF Builder product. They said the suggestion would be
considered, but I have heard nothing on this yet.

Yes, I believe there is a desparate need for a good tool. A reliable
version of DDF Builder that would run on all Windows versions would be
great.

Please keep us informed of your progress.

You might check out BtSearch32 at www.nssdd.com. While it is not a
full blown DDF editor it allows you to edit field names, lengths, types
as well as insert or delete fields. It also allows you to build DDF
files for existing files where you don't know the layout. It also
allows you to create new files. It has export/import capability as
well as file editing.

It always seemed ludicrous to me that Pervasive bought Smithware and
then threw DDF Builder away - duh ?!? Senior management at Pervasive
would be well advised to gag their marketing department just long
enough to let development build some decent tools for this otherwise
fine product :-(
