need to urgently replace servers without upgrading Oracle 7.2. Will this
version work on Solaris 8 or 9?
Has anyone done this ??
TIA

The way you ask the question - it seems you want to get support on the operating
system .... why don't you want support on the database?
Conversely, why bother upgrading the OS if you don't want the database supported?
The question is not sarcastic: there are many reasons for thinking you want to do
this, incuding "the app doesn't support the upgrade". If the app is critical to the
company, management should/will fund the app upgrade to a supported version. If it's
not so critical, you are wasting your time. And if management is pushing for the
unsupported combination, you might want to review your resume.
At the very least, check out why you can not move up to Oracle 7.3? Still not
supported (if I'm not mistaken, this is on extended support for Solaris 7 & 8) - but
you'll have friends who can help.
Finally - please don't cross post. The same people read all the groups.
Don't know. And I can't think of any reason I'd want to know. If it runs, and I
emphasize "if" it would be untested and unsuported. But then I guess that doesn't
bother your employer as with 7.2 you have a version of Oracle almost as old as you are
and they've been running unsupported for a decade or more.
My advice would be to upgrade from 7.2 to, at a minimum, 8.1.7.4 if for no other
reason than the fact that your current resume is about as likely to get you a new job
as resume with experience in ALGOL and RPG II.
If your firm is content to stay with a paleolithic database they should feel equally
comfortable staying with a neolithic operating system. I'd stay away from any changes.

Somewhere out there some company must exist with Oracle 9.2 and the init.ora
setting
COMPATIBLE=6.0
or worse?
I know what the CFO's of these companies are thinking. But I can't comprehend
the employee that would sit their watching their resume' grow stale and near
worthless. I got out of COBOL when I saw the window closing and have
never regreted the decision. I can't imagine anyone working with Oracle 7.x
thinking they are employable if they ever
lose their current job. Well I mean doing something more interesting than
flipping burgers.
Just for pure financial survival I'd walk.

I have. I walked!
I don't believe in giving advice I wouldn't take myself.
I know both Boeing and the gummint use stuff with COBOL in it,
sometimes buried deep with an interface to Oracle. That does not mean
they don't use better stuff elsewhere, and it doesn't mean that where
there is ridiculously obsolete stuff, that all stuff is bad. If you
aren't stuck with it _all_ the time, it can be fun! The trick, of
course, is remaining current, not letting the crap take over your
life.
So let's not harass the poor schmucks that do have to work on old
crap, let's help them when we can. There's nothing wrong with
pointing out obvious management issues, though. The juicier the
better, I say.

@home.com is bogus.
And obsolete stuff can be lucrative, too!
