Clearly, the word can be predicted from the length and the first and
last character. I wonder if this is a better approach than working
sequentially letter-by-letter.

Yeah yeah. :)

I hate to be the devils advocate but this has been debunked. There
are certain combinations of letters inside the word that make it
extremely hard to read. IOW some combinations are easier than others
for the mind to get a grip on.
Have a look through Slashdot, it was discussed at length there some
time ago.

I'm dyxselxyic amd taht's the esaesit tnhig I've evevr raed. If
smoneoe ncie wuodl wirte a tarsnalotr for me I cuold raed mcuh fsater.

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzz, what a phenomenon, this so cool, I never
heard of this, but I think it's very interesting, and can be of a
very important use. Dear Severian, keep playing with the words and
tell us the results, I, for instance, am interested.
