I need help to determine and draw a flat template or die line to fit any
given cone shape. Basically unfolding cones from 3D object to 2D rolled out
templates.

Shape would be used to die cut a printed part which would then be fit into a
mold, in our case a mold of a cup.

I assume measuring the diameter at the top of the cup, the bottom of the cup
and the height of the cup would give me the critical information to draw
said template.

You are at this point realizing I have little or no experience with CAD or
geometric solutions.... This is quite true. And yet I know this is not
rocket science. Any input or suggestions pointing me to a solution would
truly be appreciated as to software available to aid or the formulas needed
determine and draw unfolded template. I have seen and believe the
application as seen here http://www.plate-n-sheet.com/html/pro_dev1.html
would work well, But, ŠI am forced to find a solution which will run on Mac
OSX

This may not be the best solution but you can make one model in pro of the
cone then make a second model of the unrolled cone driven by the dimensions
of the cone model, or just make a model of the unrolled cone and drive the
dimensions from parameters in a table with formulas calculating the
dimensions of the unrolled cone.

Can't you just create a cone shaped sheet metal part? If so, I'd create the
cone using a single line sketch, thin feature it, and revolve it. Then I'd
make a thin feature extrude down the side. Click sheet metal and wha-laa.

If you need help, let me know...

it shuould be possible to copy the surface, and flatten the quilt. I
have done the same for a cup for one of out graphics people. After
flattening the quilt, I had to make sure that the pdf i created showed
a view tha twas parallel

SW2003 can make a lofted sheet metal metal part and unfold it with the new
'sheet metal loft' command.

Scott

ps. don't let a computer or an OS 'force' you to do extra work looking for
the right tools.

Don't know what happened to my post, but I've been having news server
problems.

If this is still an issue, I'd be glad to send a part or model of both
the cone and the flat.
