Excluding parts from BOM

I'm new at SW, Is there a way to exclude parts from BOM's in assemblies?

I know two ways to do it currently.
1) Create a configuration with the desired parts suppressed!
2) Insert the BOM and manually remove the parts from the contents.

The first method is probably the best one, but it would sure be nice to have
an "Exclude" or "Hide"from BOM value in the component properties.

Also, does anyone have an AutoBalloon program?

Thanks for any help!

Sort of depends on what you are trying to accomplish

We wanted a lot more control of the contents of the
BOM - In essence - We wanted to be able to over-ride
the default values in every field (Except the Item No) with
what we wanted
In the Qty field we wanted to be able to specify A/R
for things like Glue or chemicals / 13" or 10' for things like
Tape or Foam / And "REF" for Referenced Items
Occasionally we have needed to over-ride the default
Part Number and Description

Over-Riding these values is easily accomplished
Using the Qty value as an example - In the Part / Assy model
Add an additional Custom Property like "SpecialQty" every
time you want to override the default Quantity

In the BOM Template - add 2 additional columns - 1 for the
Quantity to be displayed and 1 labeled "SpecialQty" - Be sure
that the name of the displayed Quantity is different from the
Existing Qty - In the first cell of the Quantity to be displayed put
the formula =IF(ISBLANK($E2),$F2,$E2) where E2 is the
"SpecialQty" column and F2 is column for the Original Qty
And then drag this formula down a couple of hundred cells
Finally - Hide the columns for the "SpecialQty" and the original
QTY

Now - As an Example
Lets say you have a flexible part like a sensor with it's Body
located in one place and a Sensor Head located someplace else
(Granted - This could be created as a single part but not easily
if the assembly has different configs showing components in
different locations) - So now you have 2 parts in the assembly
Each has a different name

You still have 2 BOM items normally
If you give both parts the same part number & description the
BOM will combine them into a single BOM entry but the Quantity
will show 2 pieces so you need to over-ride the Quantity to get
the correct count

NOTE: SW changed the way the Balloon numbers are generated
in SW2001+SP0.0 - Before - Each sheet had to have a BOM
for the numbers to be right - After - If this trick is used then each
VIEW has to have a BOM associated with it

(Note the below can also be achieved at the time of inserting a BOM
when you are prompted for its anchor point coincident).

The Properties of the BOM can be changed after it is inserted. Do this
by RMB the BOM and selecting properties.
Activate the Contents tab. This tab controls the items that are sown
or hidden in the BOM.
If there is a check mark, the item is shown in the BOM. Clearing the
check mark removes the item from the BOM. Removing an item does not
change the item numbers of the remaining items.

Sorry I can't help with the autoballoon question.

I want to add a bit to what Eddy said. He is right that you can un-check
items and they will not show up in the BOM. There will then be skipped
numbers in your BOM.

To clean that up, just move the items that you don't want to be shown to the
bottom of your assembly tree. Just drag them with your cursor to the bottom
; hide them as Eddy describes ; and then your BOM will have consecutive
numbering.

Caveat: This does not work if an item to be not shown is part of a component
pattern. I never figured out a workaround for that situation. Your idea
about the configuration with suppressed models is probably the best bet in
that case.

If you know when you add the part to the assembly that you don't want it in
the BOM, you could add it as an envelope. Envelope parts behave almost
exactly like normal parts, except for some color behavior, and they do not
show in the BOM or higher level assemblies.

Dale,

Thanks for the response. Looks like Envelope is the answer I was
looking for.

Thanks again...
