Parts of assemblies going through each other

Hallo,
I'm using Solidworks in a computer drafting class for high school and I have
a problem. My lab partner and I are creating a rather simple assembly (7
different parts - fairly basic...) but when they are mated together moving
one moves another like it should, unfortunately the parts don't stop each
other from moving through each other. I'm basically having parts of this
assembly coming apart or going through each other, but still _basically_
working the way they should. I was wondering if it's possible to set up a
collision detection or limits for parts (only move from this face to this
face, etc..) so it works the way it should. I can't find anything about
this on the web-site, in the manual, or in the help that comes with
Solidworks. And, our Professor can't help (the lab uses 4 other CAD
programs and he has yet to learn the newest - Solidworks).

We have just the basic Solidworks setup, no add-ons that I know of (other
than Photoworks).

Can anyone help me out?
(I've set the reply-to:, to my email address...if your newsreader ignores
this (as most do) could you please send any replies to ch...@brotherhood.com
?)

Thanks in advance for any help...it's greatly appreciated...

What high school is great?<G> Erm, well I _think_ the state helps with this
sort of stuff (plus, maybe an educational discount). Of course, the high
school being in a rich area of WA probably helps out too (although, a good
portion of the students are far from rich). Anyways....wish they'd buy 3D
Studio Max. I'd love to get me hands on that, also.

Which would probably cause me to go to <comp.graphics.packages.3dstudio> and
ask for help. ;)

I believe, I will be on this thread through a couple different newsgroup
accounts. If anyone is trying to get ahold of me to help out (please,
please, please) either of my accounts used will go to me.

Thanks again...fingers are crossed that someone can help.
(imagine ascii fingers here, two of which are crossed)

Hi Shabubu,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but box-stock SolidWorks cannot do
on-the-fly collision detection. You would need an add-on application like
Working Model (~$5000) or IPA (~$1500) to do that.

SolidWorks is pretty sophisticated in the fact that you can maneuver mated
parts at all; however, I don't know of any box-stock CAD programs that can
do on-the-fly collision detection.Michelle Pillers, P.E.

Hello,

Sorry to say, this is impossible... Some of the ways to get real time collision
detection, is to use IPA or Working Model.
From SW itself, You have to rely on the static Interference detection..

I see. I somewhat figured as much, since nothing was mentioned about it in
the manual. Um, is there anyway for parts to move only within two limits?
I don't think I need collision detection if I say the parts can only go so
far....or, would that be another form of collision detection? Thanks for
the help, even if it was bad news. :)

Kirkland, Washington? Wow, I'm there too. ...We need more snow.

Thanks again...

Thanks,...
I'll ask my Professor to look into IPA or Working Model. What is static
interference detection? erm, I probably could find out from the manual in a
couple days, but could someone maybe explain it in layman terms (hence,
terms I could understand)

You can make interference detection of two (or more) bodies, when they are
still. This is just a way to see how much geometry that's shared between the
bodies. I guess this is NOT what You are looking for :o)

Static interference is just a term that people use to describe interference
detection in SolidWorks. It simply means that whatever position (static,
not moving) the assembly is in when you demand the interference check is
what it will evaluate. This is just simple math that goes on in this
command. It's very easy for the system to know that 2 objects share the
same solid space. Don't confuse this with dynamics, kinetics, or
kinematics. That happens in the add on packages (Working Model, Dynamic
Designer, and a few others).

Yeh, I like the snow, too. Spent friday skiing at Stevens Pass. It was
awesome!

Looks like a white Christmas. ;)
