hi there,
i am a novice, when i open a new drawing, it seems that the title block
were filled with variable,i.e. "$PRPSHEET:"Description"", can anybody tell
me if there is another way to fill it out instead of double click and change
the text? how to rebuild my own sheet format?
thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,

I will tackle some of your question. I am sure there are lots of ways to do
this, because I have done many different variations myself.

The `variable' you describe is actually one of many file properties of any
solid model. You can change this to text by RMB and choose edit text or
properties. If choose properties, you can either edit the text or assign a
different file property to your title block. There is an icon in the
properties dialog for selecting different properties. Play around with it.

I have several different templates depending on what sort of drawing I want.
There is a lot you can do with custom properties to automatically fill in
many portions of your title block; all the way down to automatically filling
in the sheet number and total number of sheets. There are also many clever
people (myself not among them) who have written macros for this sort of
thing.

We were all novices once. The best way to learn all of this stuff is to ask
some basic questions here or with your VAR and then just start trying
things.

Good luck.

I see many such posts in this group and it causes me to wonder why a
novice would purchase an application without understanding some of its
most basic features. I don't mean to flame anyone, but it is somewhat
annoying to see requests for help in a group when the solution is
easily found in the help system.
My first conclusion is that you have a pirated version and that you
have no support. In any case, "$PRPSHEET:"Description"" refers to a
property within the model you are detailing (file, properties, custom
tab). Modify the entry in the part and it will be represented in the
drawing.
Everything is in the help file if you spend a moment to look.

NOvice,

As was said, this information can be found in the help files but
unfortunately the way SW Corp distributes the SLDPRT, SLDDRW and SLDDRT,
it's not at all setup for the part to drive the drawing because they did
not include the properties in the part file and it suz and not very
friendly for a first time user..
So, a new user ask.. what is this s&#@ used for and how can I setup my
drawing...?!
So,.. this is probably one of the top five questions to your VAR and
leads into the,..."Well, we do have a training program which can help
you find out how to use the drawing templates with SW."

Oh well, for $5K, you would think it would work out of the box but it
doesn't.

NOTE TO SW CORP: Make it work out of the box!

Basically the distribute a crappy format and again the parts they have
do not have the properties to drive the simple $PRPSHEET (prefix to
attach/link part properties).

So,..

What I've put together here is a part file which has properties that
drive a B size drawing format and also to remind you that the B size
drawing template and the extra sheet are the forms which should be
maintained and used to update your drawing formats.

File: http://www.zxys.com/swparts/prt-drw-drt.zip

Files in zip:
00001-00001-A.SLDPRT
00001-00001-A.SLDDRW
acme-b-size.slddrt
acme-b-size-extra-sheet.slddrt

The most important thing to remember is the SLDPRT or PART file should
be driving the drawing SLDDRW sheets.

The beauty of using parametrics is for the PART to have everything
attached to the properties possible which can communicate to others what
is needed to build the part(s).

The drawing is a simple medium which helps to communicate this as well
but it is basically dumb and it should be only translating or linking
information from the part(s) file. And, that is where the $PRPSHEET
comes into play.

So, where are the "part properties" located?
Open 00001-00001-A.SLDPRT and go to the top menu and File>Properties, it
will open a menu called "Summary Information" and have tabs for
"Summary", "Custom" and "Configuration Specific".

Summary - has the general information about the part.
Custom - has the more specific variables for the part and variable which
drive the drawing template.
Configuration Specific - is for other configurations.

BTW, the drawing also has properties but I do NOT use them because I
firmly believe the drawing should not have any important data but I did
leave some variables there which are imo unimportant but are used in
some firms which separate the drafter/checker/engineer/qa from the part.
And, for that property information to be used, you need edit the drawing
format and replace the prefix $PRPSHEET with $PRP.

Getting back to the part properties under the "Custom" tab and the
($PRPSHEET) variables/links used in the drawing.
When editing the drawing, look at the different $PRPSHEET"Names", these
"Names" are the links to the "Values" which are from the "Custom" part
properties.

Also looking back the the "Summary", I use "Comments" to attach all of
my general notes and I also include other $PRPSHEET which link to my
other Custom names/values.

Anyhow, this should get you going for now.

Good luck.

There are now many educational licenses out there now.
Therefore you will run into more people with less access to support from a
VAR.

NOvice,
To answer your question, In the PART file you wish to make a drawing of, go
to File, Properties, click the Custom tab, and enter a name called
Description. Then enter a value in the Value box. Then be sure to click
the Add button to the right of the Name. This places the new property into
the lower list. If you just click Okay before clicking Add it will not add
the new property to the part file.

You should now see your new property in the lower list box.

It should read:

Name Value Type
Description Widget Text

Then when you drag the part into the new drawing sheet the Description and
any other things you decide to add will be filled in automatically.
