Does anyone know of a way to have Microstation make backup copies of files when opening
and/or when exiting? (Like AutoCAD does)

Thanks in advance.

Use the config vars. MS_INIT, MS_NEWFILE and MS_EXIT and point these to a UCM that contains the
following lines;
key 'back'
end

This will force a backup file to be created.

Thanks

In addition to this there is also BACKUP.MA. The source code can be
found on the uStn Vault CD. This MDL app creates a backup at a
predetermined interval, that is if the design file has been modified
since the last backup was created.

I have found this and Axiom Fixer very useful since neither Win95 nor
uStn95 are stable on my system.

I use this ucm idea to do quite a few things, but I found that some if
not all of the ucm keyins ran twice if I had both MS_INIT and MS_NEWFILE
- something to check. Also be sure to check your .bak file right away
(go into it and compress and stand back...) a few times to make sure it
is creating a good file, esp. if you're running on a Novell server:
there's a bug with Save As and Backup.

Hi Rhonda,

Could you please specify the problems your experiencing when using the back and save as commands.
We´ve been in to this question previously in this group but i never really saw an answer to our problems.
We´re experiencing some "odd" things as well though i can´t seem to find any continuety in the problem.
I´m not able to recreate or force the problem to occur again, very very very frustrating just sittting back
with a feeling something is wrong and not being able to find what!!!!

Maybe Ray, Phil or someone else at Bentley could sort this out once and for all. What about it guys? ;-)

As always with my best regards,
Henrik

According to the log with CSP (a darn fine institution), the above Guys are working
on a bug fix for this. I am running V5.0 PC off a Novell 3.x server: the Save As..
(always) and BACKUP (sometimes) creates bad files if created on the Novell data
volumes: it works just peachy to a DOS disk. I doubt it has anything to do with
where the command is coming from (ucm, keyin...), although we don't seem to be
running into any problems with the AUTOBACK MDL. It probably takes a 15lb maul to
the network disk and softens it up before writing the file down.

I also have problems with the licensing semaphore not being freed up until the user
logs completely off, and other amusing things, like there's the work I did this
morning, there's the stuff I just finished, where's the stuff I did four hours ago:
we think that may have been due to the Novell volume filling up during the work
session.

Fun fun fun... !
