My Logitech 3 button mouse is dying and needs a replacement, and is no
longer available. Is any model particularly better for cad than any other?
What about the wheel models? Can that wheel be used for zooming or
scrolling? Thanks in advance for your input.

The wheel mouse / intellimouse support is available in the soon(maybe)-
to-be-released v7.1, and as an enhancement to v7.0

It works pretty well, and supports zoom and pan. It's a little buggy in
MicroStation dialogs, but mainly because of keyboard focus issues.
Overall though, I find it much easier to navigate through windows with
my wheel than with a tradional mouse. I'm suddenly finding myself lost
without it when have to sit down at another computer.

Yup,
The 4 button Logitech wheel mouse, never used CAD with any other mouse. The
wheel scrolls in the latest /J 7.1. I was looking in a computer store this
evening for a second one but there was no stock. I never had a Logitech die
on me, how many years have you been using it? There is a MDL imouse.ma
included in mdlsys. I don't know if it zooms.

You are so right. I replaced my mouse with the 4 button Logitech wheel
mouse (cordless) about 3 weeks ago and wonder how I ever survived before.
Excellent choice.

Been using it about 2.5 years. The right button now, sometimes, takes 3 or 4
clicks before responding.

P.S. I couldn't locate imouse.ma on my machine. Should this have been loaded

Check in the Select web site for the Imouse.ma. I have been looking at the
Microsoft Pro, it looks like a Logitech 4 button. Might get one whe my
logitech dies.

If you check out the Logitech web site www.logitech.com you can see their mice.
I am very pleased with my 4 button wheel mouse but I lust for the cordless
models that are suddenly pretty cheap. That "tail" drives me crazy. Of course,
being left handed, I had to learn long ago to mouse with my right hand.

On the other hand, I am getting sick of cleaning that rubber ball and the scum
that collects on the rollers inside, and I am interested in the new Microsoft
"intellieye" mouse (can you say that fast 3 times?) that uses an optical sensor
instead of any moving parts and doesn't need any sort of pad. It "only" has 5
buttons, a shame it is not cordless. It looks quite sleek on their web site.

Something tells me there is a new Logitech model right on the horizon.

By the way, since everyone else has imouse.ma working with /J, I should relate
it hasn't happened for me. I am not sure what I did wrong. This is all at home
and in demo mode only (we still are running SE at work) but I am thinking to get
ready for an upgrade, I should check it out.

I got an email from a knowledgeable source that the problem could be Win95, some
versions didn't work with imouse. I recently bit the bullet and moved to Win98
to handle my new hard drive, and it still doesn't work. I have a recent download
of /J 7.0.

Any thoughts from the gallery would be welcome. I know the documentation gives
specific mouse settings but I don't see that those are available with the Logi
software.

I too have a logitech 4 Button Mouse with wheel.
You can load the mdl imouse.mdl and get all the functionality
that Microsoft intellimouse gets. ie. zoom in & out with wheel.
I have had no problems with this mdl.

The 4th button is cool. I set it up for ctrl and then I don't need to
use my other hand on the keyboard to multiselect objects in a
drag fence operation and for my function key's. Now all I nedd
is another button for alt key.

But my Co-worker bought the microsoft itellimouse trackball.
guess what. imouse.ma does not work. It comes with
intellimouse software but will not work.

Another Co-worker is using Mirosoft mouse with wheel and
doesn't have a problem.

Anyone know why trackball won't work???

In regards to wheel mouse. I don't know how I did without it.
When I go home to my normal mouse without a wheel I
get pissed off. It is so handy far everything on the computer.

Cheers

There is an Select update for J available to support a Microsoft
Intellimouse and use the wheel functions. If you can't update with select,
then get another three button mouse.

Hi Dennis
They have stopped selling the normal 3 button. I got the last one in S.A,
after hunting through several stores. They seem to only sell the Pilot mouse
at the low end and the 4 button at high end. Don't ever buy their cordless,
I did and sold it again. Useless for CAD.

I upgraded to Imouse Pro a while back from the standard MS Wheel Imouse, and
thoughly recommend it. The wheel is way easier to roll than the old one, and
the mouse is easier to hold without getting cramp.

Does the Logitech come with the associated software that Imouse does? I find
the "acceleration" feature vital with two screens, getting from one side to
the other with the flick of a wrist (no comments please Sam!).

As with the other comments, I would be lost without my wheel now. Zooming
and scrolling is now a "no-think" operation, which pretty much decribes most
of my days anyway! How come it took them so long to introduce it?

Jim,
Note my comments from another message:

Don't ever buy their cordless,
I did and sold it again. Useless for CAD.

When I say useless, I really mean useless.
Reasons: batteries run out fast, it loses co-ordination over the screen, the
little box connected to the port on the back of the machine has to be
positioned in clear view of the mouse. Not worth the hassle.

If your looking for a 'mouse' that doesn't require much cleaning... try
either the Logitech Marble or Marble FX... I use the FX at work and once
I got used to the oversized 'marble' and the wierd button layout it is
extremely comfortable and accurate with Microstation. Best part is,
their both optical driven so the only moving part is the marble
itself...

Just my 2 cents,

Thanks everyone. I purchased the 4 button Logitech MouseMan Wheel and along
with imouse.ma it works great in MS/J. The scrolling feature is nice, just
roll the wheel and the view scrolls up/down, hold down shift and it scrolls
left/right. I programmed the thumb button for shift, so this is a simple
operation. This allowed me to turn off the scroll bars, which frees up a
little screen area. To zoom, just hold down ctrl while rolling the wheel
and it zooms in/out centered on the cursor location. The only thing is when
I try to tentative w/the wheel/button, sometimes I roll the wheel and scroll
instead of placing a tentative point. That wheel/button seems kind of stiff,
maybe it will get better w/use. Also the "ratio" settings for imouse do not
seem to work. No matter how I set them the mouse always works the same. The
shape of the mouse is nice and I like the rubber grips on the sides.

Joel,
I programmed the thumb button as tentative, more positive than the wheel
button. My wheel has remained stiff after a lot of usage. I programmed the
wheel button as CTRL for selecting multiple elements in conjunction with the
data button. But you are correct that the wheel tends to move when you push
the wheel button, maybe that is why they made it a little stiff so that it
doesn't move easily. I think that wheel button would be annoying to use as
tentative.
There are quite a few settings in the Logitech software which you can set to
your liking.

This may be a throwback of the fact that I believe Imouse.ma was written to
work together with Intellimouse software, so some features may require it.

The Imouse Pro wheel is great for clicking without rolling or rolling
without clicking - something the older version found difficult.

thumb button set a tentative snap (left-right cord) in Microstation.
Works for me!

I have used both as Keith Laurie & I are in the same Company.
I have a Logitech Mouseman+ with wheel and Keith has Intellimouse PRO

There is no diference in the operation/manipulation of imouse.ma.
It all comes down to personal preference of which one you like.

In regards to the ratio's I don't have any problem.
Are you sure you are typing in "imouse config"

I have mine set at Pan up&down 50.0 Pan sideways 50.0 Zoom 1.5

Maybe you don't have it set right. Or maybe some other MDL that you auto
load
interferes with it. Have a good look.

Scott, I got mine to work properly, so let me offer some suggestions:

1. Make sure the wheel button is set to "middle button" in the Logitech
setup.
2. Make sure imouse.ma is in your mdl/required folder.
3. Set the values in imouse config large enough to suit your needs. I set
the pan ratios to 25 and zoom to 2.

Mine works great now that I have it set up properly.
