Basic(?) MDL Problem

I have a basic (I think) problem with Microstation SE on NT
4. The program, as installed, has big problems with little
tif files (10 Meg USGS topos). It takes a loooong time to
bring them up, like minutes, and frequently crashes with other
not real big dtm's, etc.

My generic question would be about how to best manage limited
memory resources, like 96 Meg (Don't laugh anybody, they say
they're getting more, eventually). It's a P2-266 Compaq.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Hi Steve,
I don't believe system memory is your problem. I would tackle the
display card and cache
If you have a built in display card on the motherboard and can't upgrade to
at least 8meg VRAM
or have the ability to disable the on board video, your SOL with that
machine.
You could speed things up a little by disabling backing store in your
preferences.

Steve,
You might want to check and see the virtual memory on your machine. NT
requires a lot of memory, as you already know, but 96meg should be plenty
enough to load a 10meg tiff file. I do not how you are loading the file, or
what you are doing with them afterwards, but I am using a p-pro 200mhz with
a mere 64meg of physical memory and do not have problems with that size
file. I can load them as a raster reference, through image manager supplied
with MSSE, or with decartes. We now have a minimum of 200meg of virtual
memory set for NT. Before we set the amount of virtual memory, we were
having some problems with loading and using these files. I don't know how
much hard drive space you can spare for virtual memory, but a minimum should
be 200meg.

Well the moral of this information is, try to increase your virtual memory.
This may not help the speed problem very much, but stability should be
improved with raster files and your DTM's as well.
