Jasper the rabbit needed new underwear, so he and his mother took a trip to the underwear store. In addition to the three packs of Plain White is mother bought, Jasper picked out a pair of creepy underwear. He was so excited to wear them, he wore them to bed that night. However, once the lights were out Jasper realized the green, ghoulish glow coming from his creepy underwear. He tried to put them in the bottom of the hamper, but woke up wearing them!
However, my older kids were laughing so much at this book, that my younger kids immediately understood that it was not to be taken seriously. The premise is that a little rabbit, who normally wears plain white underwear, decides to buy a pair of creepy, glow-in-the-dark underwear. Basically, any book that says the word underwear is a winner in my house.
This is the perfect story for making connections. At first, Jasper was afraid of his creepy underwear. What is something you used to be afraid of? The response sheets have two different options for recording their thinking. You can choose the whole sheet option or the option that has multiple sheets to a page for journals. These units are differentiated so that they can be used for both kindergarten and first-grade students. At this time of year, we expect kindergarten students to convey their thinking through drawing pictures and labeling, while first-graders are writing multiple sentences.
Jasper Rabbit is NOT a little bunny anymore. He's not afraid of the dark, and he's definitely not afraid of something as silly as underwear. But when the lights go out, suddenly his new big rabbit underwear glows in the dark. A ghoulish, greenish glow. If Jasper didn't know any better he'd say his undies were a little, well, creepy. Jasper's not scared obviously, he's just done with creepy underwear. But after trying everything to get rid of them, they keep coming back!
