Is there a variable to change dimension text to something other than
multiline text so I can change the width of the text. I have R14; can't
dimension text be edited like normal text as in R12?

As far as I know, no. The only way to convert dimension text to regular
text is to explode the dimension object and this isn't a desirable option
if you rely on the associativity of the dimensions.

That said, you can assign dimension text to a specific text style in the
ddim dialog. First you would want to define your text style with the
appropriate width. Then in the dimension style dialog merely select the
Annotation button and you'll find the option for setting the dimension text
to whatever text style you've created for it. I know this works for
standard .shx text fonts.
