Intel Celeron Chips Bad for AutoCAD???

I've heard rumors that Intel's Celeron chips are unsuitable for
AutoCAD. We are strictly running AutoCAD r14 and 2000.

I don't see why a smaller L2 cache could cause AutoCAD problems, but I
don't want to take the chance.

Thanks,

-jb

We have 2 A2k stations using Celeron 400's with 64mb ram. They both behave
themselves. They have acceptable speed for basic drawing.

I don't have special problems with AutoCAD (R14 and R2000) on my Celeron
notebook. I have seen reliable benchmark tests with 3D Studio and other
rendering software where the Celerons gained an +/- 5% advantage over
equally-clocked Pentium III processors. I guess this depends on the size
of the models, where sometimes the smaller, but full-speed cache of the
Celerons have advantages.

I'm using Intel's Celeron chip with A2K, no problems at all!

Celerons are a little slower than equivalent Pentium-2, but some of my
cow-workers are "Celerons" themselves.... *grin*

There is no reason that they shouldn't work, if a little slower.

Sheessh.......great work mate you are Dave. I hope your cow-workers (mooo)
don't read the cad newsgroups.

BTW.....I've been wondering what the / part of your sig. means. Do you part
your hair on the right or have a sloping flat head? (no offence intended)

Cam......(greying head)

"Cow-workers"? (grin)

David - do you have any experience or info regarding the Athlon
processor?

Cow-workers is a dilbertism - and describes a few of my mates all too well.

No first or even second hand tests yet - and you can find good and bad
reviews all over the net.
But I'm running a 700 MHz P-III, with 256M RAM, if anyone wants to do some
benchmarking.

Most of my cow-workers don't even know what they are - and would only be
interested in the ones that start with alt.binaries.pictures.erotica......

But then I got contacts - and the winking eyes looked lonely, so I added the

This is not quite what you asked, but take a look here
http://www.motherboards.org/reviews/ep7kxa.html

This motherboard plus Athlon 800 *smoked* the opposition in a recent test
locally.

Thanks, Cam. The reson I'm interested is I just purchased a new Athlon
based system. Kinda after the fact I realize but all one persons I
researched the issue with assured me it was a wise choice. Of course
the fact that that one person is the person that sold me the machine
gives pause. (g)

Should be here sometime next week so I might take David up on the
benchmark comparisons.

Could be fun. If its REALLY faster, maybe I'll start bugging my VP about
another "tech refresh" - at this rate, our SECRETARIES will be using 550
P-3's soon....

I've got a Celeron 475mHz and run Rel 14 & Rel 2000 (on the same machine -
an IBM Aptiva) & haven't had any probs. I've only heard that "overheating"
b.s. from salesmen who want to sell more expensive Intel machines.
