I think that my AutoCAD reseller has a good answer for this question.
He told me that WinNT would be a more robust OS than Win 95 but NT will
need a much higher degree of experience for configuring it. So, if you
don't have the technical advice or you cannot count on somebody else to
help you with this it could be more difficult trying to use NT. Even if
I have found lots of answers in this News Group, NT could lead to
disappointment. Here i'm talking about OS, trustees and networking not
AutoCAD performance nor system requirements (hardware).

Just a thougth

AutoCAD R14 will ship for the Windows95 or Windows NT
operating systems only, and if I'm not mistaken for
running only on Intel and DEC Alpha chips.

For editing drawing in the 2-6mb size I would definitely
recommend the NT operating system, if you can meet the
hardware requirements. Autodesk has recently set up an
R14 preview area on their web site at http://www.autodesk.com
complete with a demo copy you can download.

I think they recommend a Pentium 90 with at least 32mb RAM
plus adequate hard drive space for the operating system, AutoCAD
and a 100mb swap file.

Hope this helps.

I can't tell if there is a question her but there is lots of information
about NT on the MS newsgroup.

It's harder to use than 95, or maybe just different, but I have yet to
crash AutoCad using NT4.

I've spen the last couple of years installing R13 on Windows 95, NT 3.51,
NT4.0 and unfortunately Win31. I believe that NT is a better solution
when used in a hetorgenous network environmnet. If you want tcp/ip
printing via unix workstations then NT is the way to go. I prefer the
4.0 flavor to the 3.51 flavor just because more users have Windows 95
at home and it works and taste the same as NT 4.0.

However, I have found nothing in Windows NT that I couldn't do in
windows 95 (sometimes it just ment buying some client software). My
OPINION is that if you work in a large network environment it pays to
have NT, if not, you may as well use 95. Preferably pawn it off on
your IS department and let them worry about it. AutoCAD runs just
as well either way.

You're leading a charmed life, Mike! (grin)

NT itself is difficult to bring to its knees. Applications can and do lock
up, freeze, crash, abort, you name it. But rarely (but not *never* does the
os (NT) take a powder.

Actually it is *just* Win95 or WinNT for Release 14, no Dec Alpha
port anymore.

Hi christal...@autodesk.com (Christal Elliott)!

~Actually it is *just* Win95 or WinNT for Release 14, no Dec Alpha
~port anymore.

I personally don't use anything but NT, but this seems like a relatively
myopic attitude on the part of Autodesk.
