You'll find all this kind of information within the Acad books!! Acad
12 has it conveniently located in the back of their Big (hardback)
manual (appendix's). If you are using Acad 13.... good luck in
figuring out which book to use! (: but it's all there (might save you
a few $$$).

Chuck,
You would need to have a text style set up the uses a font that would
support these symbols.
Sincerely,

It'd probably be better to write a LISP routine (or have someone nice
give you one) that draws the various symbols. The symbol sizes are
defined as a function of text height, so a good LISP would take
text height into account.
You can find the symbol definitions in the ANSI Y14.2 Drawing
Requirements Manual - or ask and I'll email you a copy of the scanned
page.
I'd write the LISP, but I don't know how.

I have been using AutoCAD for years. I also wish AutoCAD supported the
new ANSI symbols. However, unless someone writes a new text style it
does not exist. If someone replies and sends you a text style please
forward it to me.
An other thing you can do is fax Autodesk the "wishlist, bug report" form
in the back of your manual. Tell them you want full ANSI symbol support.
I have. If enough people do they will support it.
Also, on your question on a Designer book. I still have not seen one.
The best bet now to learn Designer is to take a training course at your
dealer.
Hope I have helped you.

Regarding your need for ANSI symbol support for AutoCAD, as far as I know
it does not exist. You or someone would have to write a new text file
with these symbols supported. If you find or get one please forward it
to me.
In reguard to a designer book/manual. as far as I know it still does not
exist. the best thing to do is to get training at your dealer or closest
AutoCAD training center.
Hope I have been a help.

Doug, I use an addon package which is not commercially available. It
uses a "Bigfont" which the programmer calls MECHDIMS.SHX It contains
extended characters for the ANSI Counterbore, Countersink, Depth, etc...
For instance, if I want the counter bore symbol |__| I type in `u and
the symbol shows up on the screen. If I want the depth symbol, `d gives
it to me.
If you or anyone else is interested I can email it to you - the
developer has told me that I can copy it to others who need it. Reason
being is that if you use the font in your drawing and then pass the
drawing to someone else, they need the font in their ACAD path.

I have purchased a book from Autodesk Press. It's called Autodesk
Mechanical Desktop Training Set. The book along with the instructor's
guide is sold for $99. Seems a lot better than the manual's tutorial.
I've gone through chapter 1 so far.
