Hi:

We have set autocad to save its temp files every 14 minutes, but have run into a
problem in restoring the temp files. These files (in our case) are saved in
C:/Temp as a file with a $ in the extension. We had a power outage recently and
lost two hors work because we could not get the saved files back as usable files
for cadding. Can someone tell me how to recover the temp files so that we can
work on them -- because without that capability its sort of useless to save them
in the first place.

One person told me to rename the files and give them an extension of .dwg BUT
the NT system we are using WILL NOT PEWRMIT US TO CHANGE EXTENSIONS on these
files!!

Thoughts and suggestions much welcomed.

Regards

Hi John,
First let's get terminology straight. Autocad temp files (.ac$ by default), and
automatic save files (.sv$) are two different creatures. You are, I'm sure, talking
about the the automatic save files. As far as I know, the temp files (.ac$) are just
that, meaning they are temporary, and are resolved and "go away" upon a proper
termination of the session. On the other hand, they do get left on disk when you
lock up, etc. It seems that you have a read-write access limitation on your NT
system that is keeping you from changing the file extension. Visit with your network
administrator to get that resloved. Once you rename, it should work.

Hi again John,
After looking at the preferences a little more, it seems you are trying to convert
the Autocad temporary files back into drawings. This will not work. You need to
locate the "mydwg.sv$" file for renaming. C:\Temp is the default location for Acad's
temporary files (.ac$), which should only be present while you have a session
running. Any ac$ files that exist in C:\Temp while Acad is not running should (I'm
pretty sure) be deleted.

Hi;

Thank you for your response to my somewhat incoherent note. Am I correct that I
should be able to find a file called mydwg.sv$ in C:/Temp (or the designated
directory) and that when I convert that to a dwg extension it should all work?
As I noted, the attempt was to recover from a system crash so it should still
have been there, however I could not change the extension on the .sv$ files.
The "system administrator" on this is me --- and I have run into the same
trouble with windows 95 systems -- but have no idea how to over come them.

Help or suggestions on this one also welcome.

regards

Are you able to simply make a copy of the *.sv$ files to a local drive
(where you *do* have renaming privileges)? If so, copy the file, rename
it to *.dwg, and you should be on your way.
