I was told that ACAD Lt would open and work on ACAD files in two dimensions.
I need to be able to open an Autocad file (Acad 14) that is a 2D file, floor
plans and the like and modify and add to it and return the file back so that
it can be further processed in Acad 14.

Can I use Acad Lt for this or would I be better off just to use Autocad in
the first place. Are there any caveats if I do use Acad Lt? Thanks for any
help or suggestions.

surely you can, file format is the same.

John,

It sounds like AutoCAD LT will fit your needs perfectly. If you buy the
latest version, LT 2000, make sure you Saveas the R14 compatible version
when working with someone using R14.

The only caveat is that you won't be able to run Lisp routines on your
LT version. This now can be accomplished with third party software,
however. LT will also view 3D objects, you just can't create them.

Good luck!

John,
I just moved to AutoCAD LT2000 to accomplish the exact same thing you are
requesting. My other program (Visual Cad) would write DWG files but they
weren't true AutoCAD files and my customers had trouble with them

When I do it with AutoCAD LT2000 and save it as a ACAD R14 file, it works
perfectly.

Money well spent, the only problem is unlearning your old program and moving
to the AutoDESK way of doing things.

Add a plug-in like Smart Architect LT and pick up the 3D modeling and a
bunch of architectural routines and blocks and you have an ideal design and
construction tool. These two programs (LT and Smart Architect LT) almost
equal Architectural Desktop at a fraction of the cost.

LT Toolkit 2000 will be here within a couple of months to add LISP to LT2000
also.

Let me know if you want more information.

With third party add-ons you CAN create 3D objects... LT3D by drcauto will
do this. Their LT Toolkit 2000 will add LISP programming also (due out in
about
2 weeks). LT3D is available now.

If you want to use LT for architecture then, of course, Smart Architect LT
is the ticket you need, also by drcauto.
