BAPCoTM Releases Industry's First Benchmarking Software
Suite which Measures Business Computing Needs in One Package

SANTA CLARA, Calif., November 16th, 1998-- The Business Applications
Performance Corporation (BAPCo), a non-profit consortium of leading computer
industry publications, independent testing labs, PC hardware manufacturers,
software publishers, and semiconductor manufacturers today announces SYSmark®
Bench Suite, the industry's first benchmark Suite for measuring the
performance of desktop, and notebook computers running on Windows*98, Windows
95, Windows NT 4.0, and Java Development Kit Version 1.1 (JDK1.1).

BAPCo breaks new ground again with the release of SYSmark Bench Suite, a
bundled suite of BAPCo's popular application-based benchmarks that addresses
new challenges faced by corporations and end-users in one tool. SYSmark Bench
Suite is a suite of 4 application-based benchmarks that includes SYSmark 98,
SYSmark for Windows NT 4.0, SYSmark 98 for Battery Life, and SYSmark J. SYSmark
Bench Suite workloads encompasses traditional Office Productivity, Internet
Content Creation, Speech Recognition, Project Management, Computer-Aided
Design, to Image Processing and Multimedia Java applications. The benchmarks
have been developed using BAPCo's pioneering functional-modeling methodology
that focuses on usage patterns of actual users. The results of this methodology
provides the SYSmark Bench Suite application benchmarks a reflection of today's
usage and also provides an accurate impression of the future performance of
personal computers in emerging areas such as Speech Recognition, Internet
content Creation and Java.

"The main advantage of purchasing the SYSmark Bench Suite is cost reduction,"
says John Florkowski, BAPCo's president. "If a corporate buyer were to
purchase the benchmarks separately that are included in the SYSmark Bench
Suite, the cost would be a total of $1,238 dollars. Purchasing the SYSmark
Bench Suite bundle for $849 dollars, represents a $389 dollar cost savings. We
expect demand to be high, since this is the first and only benchmark suite of
its kind."

Benchmarks included in the SYSmark Bench Suite:
SYSmark 98. A suite of 14 application-based benchmarks ranging from
traditional Office Productivity to Internet Content Creation, and Speech
Recognition. The advantage of using SYSmark 98 lies in the strength of its
workloads, which reflect actual usage of real applications within the new
computing paradigms.

SYSmark for Windows NT 4.0. A suite of 5 application-based benchmarks ranging
from word processing, spreadsheet, project management, to computer-aided
design, and presentation graphics programs that allows performance comparisons
across both Intel and Alpha architectures.

SYSmark 98 for Battery Life. A suite of 5 application-based benchmarks ranging
from word processing, spreadsheet, to MS Flight Simulator 98, and incorporating
Internet browser software. SYSmark 98 for Battery Life is the first ACPI*
power-managed battery life benchmark in the industry, and displays the
realistic balance between a typical mobile business user and battery
performance.

SYSmark J. A suite of 4 application-based benchmarks ranging from word
processing, spreadsheet, to image processing and multimedia programs. SYSmark J
allows performance comparisons across platforms that support Java Development
Kit Version 1.1 (JDK1.1). The application tests within SYSmark J will be able
to run across popularly supported implementations of JDK1.1 on several
operating systems and platforms.

SYSmark Bench Suite contains four, independent and comprehensive benchmarks
that can be used by Information technologists, Industry publications and
testing labs, hardware developers who need to analyze and tune products under
development, software developers who want to optimize the performance of their
applications, and Fortune 500 companies to accurately forecast present and
future desktop computing needs.

Key SYSmark Bench Suite features that are present include the following:
· A robust set of application benchmarks covering a wide range of application
categories
· New application benchmarks in areas such as: Office Productivity, Internet
Content Creation , Speech Recognition, Project Management, Computer-Aided
Design, to Image Processing and Multimedia Java applications
· Support for Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, and Java Development Kit
Version 1.1
· Comprehensive and long-running workloads that test many aspects of
application performance
· Independently designed and developed by a consortium of 15 different
organizations covering a wide spectrum of industry leaders
· Statistical analysis of run-times ensuring consistency and repeatability

Other features
· An automated point-and-click Benchmark Manager;
· Automated set up of the operating environment for proper and consistent
execution of each of the workloads;
· Ability to collect and store performance data for user-specified projects;
· Automated generation of BAPCo's Full Disclosure Report (FDR) for ensuring
consistent reporting of results

SYSmark Bench Suite is available for $849.00 USD. The benchmark was developed
and is fully supported by the current BAPCo membership, which includes:
Adaptec, Amdahl Corporation, Compaq, Dell, EMAP Computing Labs, Federal
Computer Week, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, InfoWorld, Lotus, Microsoft, NEC,
Digital Equipment Corp., and Unisys.
