Welcome to KAIWAN Public Access Internet On-Line Services.

User accounts are available for everyone who would like to use our service
for non-profit and non-business related purposes and who will abide by the
NSFnet rules.

KAIWAN can be accessed through Internet or dial-in phone lines. Since
KAIWAN is directly connected to Internet, all the Internet resources are
accessible by KAIWAN users.

Our cheapest rate is $11.00/month for users who telnet into KAIWAN only
and do not access KAIWAN's modems and dial-in lines.

Example of the usage of our Accounts:

* FLAT Rate(monthly or quarterly) with no per hour charge and no connect
time charge.
* Shell (csh, sh, ksh, tcsh, r9, bash, zsh ...) access.
* Disk space starts from one mega byte.
* No access time per day limit, and you can use as often as you want.
* No access time length limit, and you can access your account 24Hrs.
* Read over a couple thousand Newsgroups.
* All dial-in ports are equipped with ZyXEL 16.8K super high speed modems,
which allow you to download more files using less time.
* File transfer protocols (FTP, X/Y/Z/U modem, Kermit)
* Internet domain E-Mail address user...@kaiwan.com.
* Read news and E-mail with direct Internet connection.
* Full Internet access (telnet, ftp, rlogin, irc...)
* Tons of PD utilities (We will add any upon request).
* New local dialing POPs will be added in schedule or upon requests.
* uqwk to collect your mails and news for off-line reading/posting.
* pine, elm, mm ... mail readers for you to choose.
* rn, trn, tin, nn ... News readers for you to choose.
* MUD, irc, gopher, lynx....
* POP3

This is an un-solicited testamonial to Kaiwan Internet services. They are
truely great and the best bargan I have ever seen. Also, when ever I
needed help they were right there to give me the proper advice, being at
the time I was a Internet newbee.

I'm no Internet wiz, but if I can read the KAIWAN advertisement here on
the Internet, wouldn't that argue that I already have Internet access
and don't need KAIWAN's services? Who is the ad intended to target?
Or rather, since I'm on the net, what services can KAIWAN offer me that
I dont already have?

A lot of people read usenet through small bbs's that only offer e-mail and
partial newsfeeds. Usually those sytems are running waffle or something
like that. Many people find out about the internet by learning from the bbs's
and then migrating to a commercial provider.

Then there are those individuals that for one reason or another would like
to change providers. Better customer service, local phone numbers, lower
access rates, etc.

And then there are those who are in school and are finishing up and will like
to continue to have net access in some form, or those whose companies or
organizations prohibit accessing their machines for personal use.

I would tend to believe that the ads for internet service are geared towards
that audience.

You're reading <Usenet>, which is not the same as the Internet. In your
case, Usenet is available on your Internet machines, but there are a lot
of people reading Usenet on straight MS-DOS machines running PC-Board or
TBBS or whatever. These machines receive their Usenet feed via UUCP or
something similar - or via satellite broadcast. They're not connected
to the Internet.

Why would someone with an Internet connection want another connection?
You might be looking for another job and not want anybody where you're
working to know that - mail does bounce and there are snoopy bosses
and/or sysadmins. You might have a lifestyle or religious or political
beliefs that you don't want your coworkers to know about. You might not
get a complete feed of all the newsgroups at work.

You might want a permanent address that follows you when you change jobs
- you just edit your .forward in your home directory and mail goes to
wherever you are. This is particularly good for contractors, who can
read mail at company A during your 3-month contract there, then it goes
to company B, etc.

As to why anyone would do business with KAIWAN, I dunno. They've posted
their ad all over the place - misc.forsale.computers.mac, for example -
and seem to have no idea as to what netiquette is.

There are a lot of places that sell what KAIWAN does for 3/4, 1/2, or
even less - and have been doing it for years instead of months. But you
don't seem them plastering ads in every imaginable - or otherwise -
newsgroup ... Send mail to in...@teleport.com for one example. There

I think this is targeted at people who only have partial net access..
like someone who can only telnet but nothing else (I know someone who
is in this situation).

There are BBSs all over the world that offer only email and news.
There are commercial institutions that limit employee's use of the net. There
are students graduating or metriculating who will lose their .edu accounts.
I can do this all day... :)

Since KAIWAN is connected to the net through ISI, they purport to only take
accounts not violating the NSF Acceptable Use Policy in the above junk-mail
ad. However, it would appear that they themselves are violating that
policy by reselling their connection for profit. It seems to me that
they should not be in business in this manner as they are flagrantly
violating the NSFnet AUP. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't buy
service from someone who is violating the AUP to provide cheap service to
their clients. How they remain in business is a mystery to me.

That and supposedly non-confederate testimonials aside, I've tried their
service and, obviously, went elsewhere.

I don't know if there are too many people who would pay $11/month
to do what Kaiwan wants them too do. If one can telnet they can
play muds, get usenet through some of the usenet servers that are
telnetable. What else is there? Just a permenant mail site, well thats
no biggie, all you need is to get some local sysop whose run a BBS f
for quite a while and have them set a forwarding alias to what
ever site you maybe working at.

Kaiwan probably is really hard up for sales, assume that if what one
reader just said about them posting to the comp.forsale.mac.???
newsgroup. I would expect that their biggest revenue should come
in from dial up and slip connection accounts.

Some people prefer to have it all in one easy to access nicely wrapped
package. Some people prefer to use TinyFugue to access MUDs, and
public IRC clients are few and far between nowadays. Depends on you
obviously.

Maybe the fact that the services are offered FREE OF CHARGE! If it were
not LD for me, I would give it a call!
