They are. Unfortunately that spam forged an Approved: header, so they
circumvented the moderator. The moderation bot isn't really designed to
prevent spam (though it helps), but posts from people who didn't bother to
find out what the group was about before posting.
I'm idly wondering whether we really need the moderator now. Maybe the bot
is doing its job well, but I'm not convinced that we're the off-topic
posting target we were as alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt. The name change
seems to have fixed that - perhaps something we/I didn't think about as
proponent was that with such a name moderation might have been unnecessary.
I don't think we had that many people flaming us from achh back in 1997, and
I doubt there are many today.
